Yeah, at this rate I wouldn't be surprised if certain Cryptic employees "left to pursue new opportunities" in the near future.

All I know is if I were in charge of things and I saw the response right after Delta Rising, I would have done a massive damage control effort rather than doubling down on the bullshit. At this point it's probably too late to get players back without some massive and very visible changes.

Honestly it doesn't seem that difficult on paper. Launch a new expansion focused on something universally loved - TNG. Promo it being all about the players, making the endgame accessible and encouraging players by taking the above suggestions re ship and item levelling.

Somehow I doubt that would work. They already hosed up the game on launch, spent more than three years digging themselves out of that hole only to flush all that work right back down the drain. Fool me once and all that.

Dear Cryptic: you'd make more money if you made the game fun again. You know, like before Delta Rising. All this stuff is just squeezing blood from a stone as you drive more and more players off.

Re: SWToR

Sad Pandas (pubbie PvP group with a good number of goons in it) moved on to ToR a while ago. It's apparently pretty decent now and the PvP is great so long as you don't mind paying $15 a month. It's not F2P past the story line, which I've enjoyed a good bit so far. If I were to play a MMO again it would more than likely end up being this one, and I've enjoyed what I've played so far as of level 10ish, but that may be because I haven't reached the MMO part of it yet; I haven't gotten much further because I don't want to play any MMO at the moment. The grind isn't bad and the devs aren't completely incompetent. Of course this is just stuff I've heard from a couple of people so take it as you will. They also tell me there's a ton of PvP on the RP servers, so not only do they get their fill of PvP but they get to mess with weirdos constantly.

Also everyone has max boob slider! :woop:

There was no good way for them to do this. They couldn't do another sale of the old bugship because it's outdated and the space rich already have it. They couldn't give it out as a free upgrade for previous owners because again, the space rich already have it and wouldn't need to buy boxes.

To me do we even need new ships every two weeks? In the past two months they came out with the new breen ship, then a month later the most recent lockbox ships, then the Kobali ship a couple weeks after that, and then they just released nine new command ships in the store, now there's this ship, and I'm pretty sure I missed some other give away or reward gamble event in between there.

edit: and a month before that was the sheshar, then a month before that was the nine or whatever new store DR intel ships plus the two or three lock box ships the expansion launched in

more ships edit: oh and the new intrepid store ship that had the t6 intrepid with limited time bonuses sale somewhere in there too

that's like...almost thirty ships or something in the past four months, in a game with terrible balance and a ton of ships to begin with

It's almost like people have stopped playing at all giving them money and they're desperate to wring out as out as much online users and shop purchases as possible.

And I guess it's easier to tank interest with a deluge of promotions rather than actually fixing the hosed up gameplay.

They could have made it anything other than another bugship. As you said, the bugship has been outdated for years, it was selling based solely on rarity/cachet. Make the new ship a liberated borg ship, or another voth ship, or even a pakled ship. Just not a replacement bugship.

So much for the only MMO I've found which was casual enough for me to make it to end game and actually participate. A combination of gamer ADD and lack of time to play means that I've never made it to max level in any other MMO I've tried. Oh well. There's plenty of stuff in my steam backlog I can play instead.

Yeah, that's the sad thing. STO was the only really super-casual MMO on the market. No queue took more than twenty minutes or so, there wasn't any raid-style bullshit, and it wasn't a big deal to alt tab or something if anything came up, and there was absolute boatloads of character customization. There's nothing really like it.

Also, if we're revamping poo poo, bump up XP to where it was back when people were grinding romulan patrols.

Then turn specialization points into an 8 hour crafting or rep project, with expertise as the crafting component.

That satisfies the 'player shouldn't progress too fast' fetish without being an insane grind

Specializations in general seem to be the most baffling thing. Like I've said before, Cryptic already had the perfect system for long-term gated progress in the reputation system. It's really quite clever as those things go; advancing the reputation takes very little playtime, but the daily cooldowns give a minimum length before you're done. The relatively low requirements means it's not a big deal for people to pop in and poke at it, and presumably get involved in other content, see sales or events, or whatever else in the meanwhile. And beyond that you still need the marks to buy the rewards at the end, but you can do that at your own pace in the meanwhile, binging it over a weekend or doing a queue a day or just ignoring it entirely if you want.

But specialization levels don't have that gating, so of course people were going to blitz it hard as soon as they could, and of course Cryptic would wind up nerfing XP due to this because they wanted it to be a long term reward. But this doesn't solve the core issue, so after a few back and forth repetitions we've wound up with the current situation of leveling being slow and tedious for everyone and it basically being impossible to meaningfully gain specialization points on more than one character at a time. This end result should have been blindingly obvious to any competent developer while it was in the design phase, so why did it launch like this?

The developer who forced it out was a dumb fucker.

The reputation system stuff also has the added bonus of enticing people to log in every day, even if it's just to set up a new project.

You mean three years doing nothing, trying to ditch Atari, then collecting some money purely based on Star Trek name recognition while putting all their resources into Neverwinter? The only real effort expended into STO was for LoR. The real sad part is the best improvement during those three years was Heretic creating the doff system and that was a labor of love he did on his own time, not on the clock.

I didn't say they were intentionally digging themselves out of that hole. Certainly in retrospect, that was a complete accident.

That's not entirely fair. Pretty much everything added to or changed in the game from right before LoR to right before Delta Rising was pretty great. Everything about the Romulans was pretty good, all the story content added in the meanwhile was fun to play, they added the duty officers and reputations and other casual advancement options, they added the dyson sphere and everything related to it (including the battlezones, probably the most fun pieces of content put in the game), and so on. There's a reason the game kept growing even after the initial rush of romulan alts died down. There weren't really any big mistakes beyond the usual QA issues Cryptic's always had problems with.

It's part of what made the massive failures of the Delta Rising content so spectacular in comparison. Even if it's still obvious too much was pulled from STO to be dumped into the shitpile of Neverwinter though, yes.

Tunicate
May 15, 2012

Yeah, they did a lot of QoL improvements, too.

Streamlining reps, alt friendly tokens, giving the rep alt discount. The reworked traits system was a step up too, even if it didn't go far enough splitting ground and space stuff.

It really looked like they were paying off their technical debt and making things work better.

And yeah everything with the dyson sphere was great.

Anyway, I was very clearly talking about the first three years. Post LoR, we had about 12-18 months of good times, I certainly won't deny that. So this whole game was put together with two years of effort by dozens of different people that didn't/couldn't/wouldn't talk to each other and no one really knew what was going on or how anything worked and had constantly changing orders and now its all falling apart. Who woulda thought.
