Second playthrough was after a computer upgrade but before the new engine, so it was a little tougher but not bad. Then I put it away until like a few months ago, and I've been sucking ever since. I'm making my way through the new one fine but I'm getting D rankings. A lot. But I'm still having fun with the game because dying isn't punishing, you can reload in a second and start again a-la Super Meat Boy. Or with how the randomized AI works, nobody pays attention to you blasting a guy right in front of them except for a guy on the other side of the level who blindsides you with a shotgun snipe through a window. The entire design of the game is so at odds with HM1, save for the visuals and audio. Enemy placements, level design, the jumping around in the story... It feels like the devs weren't aware of what made HM1 good. I don't regret playing it, but it's not an impactful sequel. It's not even "more of the same", it's "more of the same, but worse". And jesus, gently caress that mouse acceleration.

The AI ain't that randomized at all, actually. If a guy that's close to you doesn't hear gunshots, it's because he was programmed to be deaf.

How do I beat the Swans when I'm tripping balls. Tried attacking each head, the body, throwing the axe. Tried running away, but I just get shot. Ok, so you kill the first head by waiting for the mouth open, but the other one is always miles away by the point? Just did it. Some are designed to never leave their post or their path unless they see you, in which case they'll give chase but if you lose them they'll return to their post. Which is pretty dope. Someone will probably make an argument for Hotline Miami 2 on the basis that it's some sort of satire on Hollywood sequels, especially the ones from the era that the game is set upon... but I ain't the one, cause this game is hella dumb, more often than not I'll just rip the soundtrack off it

They throw a wrench in the works with their design; literally, you have to throw and hit them with something first before they can be killed. Regular melee works fine if you time it right (not sure about punches). Obviously though that timing is a bit of a bitch to get.

I'll play through on hard and hope it's maybe more fun a second time through. Like I replayed the first one probably 10+ times but I can't really see that happening here, it just felt like a slog

It's not a horrible game by any means, but it feels inferior to it's predecessor. Mainly because of the level design, and that really doesn't become that apparent until later in the game.

Just marathoned it and I gotta say, not sure why everyone's been having so much difficulty. The power plant especially, if you're not abusing the ridiculousness that is the sniper rifle for the big guys, then just baiting the normal guys then you should be. Also, too much

Their attacks really remind me of dogs, they have more range than your standard goon. If you don't swing the baton soon enough they'll get you, that's for sure. Edit: I didn't know you could just punch them, but in this game you don't really have time to execute guys.

Also I think people are putting the first game up on a pedestal. It was pretty great, but it wasn't a Perfect Flawless Masterpiece and neither is this one. But this one's still really good.

Also it's easy to excuse the first game's flaws because it was a new, weird thing, and not a largely identical sequel that ultimately doesn't add much of anything to the table. It doesn't even fix most of the first game's problems.

I'm confused by all of the negativity too Maybe it's because I only played Hotline Miami for the first time last week and I didn't have to wait for years to play the sequel but I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm only on chapter 8, so maybe I'll change my mind later.

People are upset because it's a sequel that brings nothing worthwhile to the table and a whole heap of stuff nobody wanted. Nobody wanted to have their character choices limited by stage. Nobody wanted more sprawling levels filled with one-hit kill shotguns. Nobody wanted a non-lethal option. HM2 wants to be story-focused and the plot was bar none the least important aspect of this series. What mattered was obliterating men with a variety of weapons to acid-laced techno music. Even the weapon variety's been hacked down.

I liked every level immensely so far and the reason it feels harder and more frustrating is because gameplay chunks that used to be one floor long are now about a quarter of a floor, so if you gently caress up you have more stuff to do which is a little annoying but that's OK. Also I've actually read all the 'plot' so far and it's basically all the same length as the HL1 plot bits except with slightly more walking. Also, there's technically less variety but it hardly matters because more than half the weapons in HLM1 were just reskins of the bat or the knife or whatever. On top of all that, having, uh, 'enforced' character gimmicks just makes the levels feel more tightly designed, IMO. On top of that no matter which mask I picked in HLM1 it hardly seemed to ever make a difference unless it was Tony or the faster movement ones.
