I stopped playing jrpgs altogether because once I stopped being an awkward teenager I got pretty bored of playing as one in literally every jrpg ever. I've been playing Diablo 3 again since Season 2 started and I like how many obtuse little things the game trims from the ARPG formula. The skill runes, teleporting around the world, getting to party member locations quickly. I'm impressed with how far the game has come from the mess it was at launch.

See I like JRPG's (you can tell by my avatar) but the Final Fantasy games have never clicked for me. It's just so boring and I have never found the settings of the games to be interesting either. However I really liked Crisis Core and wish I could get it on my Vita.

If you would play anything AC over anything FF then you've never seen the dark depths of FF sidegames. On-topic: A neat little thing in inFamous: Second Son is that for most of the game, when you use your smoke power super-attack, the main character zooms super high into the air with a poo poo-eating grin on his face, then slams back down into the ground. When you're in a boss fight with the main bad guy, right after they do a very Bad Thing, instead of the grin he's got a super pissed off face. It's a really neat touch that you don't expect.

Other rpgs have done this but Wizardry 8 really makes your dudes feel more like people rather than player controlled robots. There's 32 different voicesets, 16 male and 16 female, and they are all fun to use and full of personality. Not only that, your party members say some pretty funny poo poo at times. It's like the voice options from the Saint's Row games on steroids. I always assign Crazy Russian lady to my faerie wizard. "Got trap on it."

For something positive, I've been playing Syndicate (the 2012 FPS), and it has an awesome flamethrower. It sprays ignited thermite at people, and all those poor assholes caught in the blast have rather entertaining "OH gently caress I'M BURNING! " reactions. It's also kinda nice that there's no moral compass of any kind in the game. If you want to go through capping civilians because they're in your way, than go right for it. There's even a stretch where the game hands you a minigun and walks you through a hallway with about a dozen civilian scientists from another Corporate Syndicate fleeing across from a side door, with about only three or four actual enemy guards in their midst.

I'm replaying Silent Storm and remembering the quality of detail that was in those old games. It's like Jagged Alliance - a turn-based tactual squad game set in WWII. Like many games of its sort and era, there's plenty of needless gun porn (which if twenty nearly identical pistols do you want to use as the backup to one of twenty different rifles that all look the same and are incrementally different from each other?) but the big selling point is the destructability of everything. And it does this well, but that's not what got my attention. They didn't do things like worry about accuracy and just say you hit or missed - each bullet, shell and grenade fragment is individually calculated and mapped as an object on the map. If you miss, you can see where the missed shot goes and what (or who) it eventually strikes to stop. Everything has penetration levels so you can shoot people through walls, people through other people, etc. But this doesn't just matter when you fire - the game keeps track. I had a sniper set up and picking off Nazis during one mission, and he ended his turn having wounded his target. On the German turn, one of their guys stepped around a corner close by to the sniper, got in front of him and fired with a pistol. As happens very rarely, the shot hitting caused my sniper to twitch and pull the trigger on his gun out of reaction. The game still knew where that rifle was and how it was being held, and performed accordingly. The reaction shot blew the head off of the guy with the pistol, flew through him and then re-hit the guy I'd wounded before, killing him as well. Now that's a shocking level of detail to keep track of.

FFX has some nice little things that live up to this thread - you can play Blitzball whenever you want, you can swap out characters in the middle of battles, you can see the upcoming turn order...lots of cool little touches there. Of course the plot is boring nonsense, the outfits were put together by a colorblind person having a seizure, the voice acting is atrocious, and the leveling system is weird just for the sake of being weird.

In Hotline Miami 2, some of the characters discuss getting from one building to another with one of them being unsure he could make it. The game takes away the option to choose who you play as, and the level progresses without any mention of unsure character. After beating the level, you find out he couldn't jump the gap, based on a large corpse outline.

Are they just a lot more prevalent in Attila or something? Or am I just expecting too much logic from those people? If you go through in co-op the scene in the bank where Kane freaks out and kills a bunch of civilians claiming they're cops gets even better. Apparently, the second player actually sees all the civilians turn into cops and start shooting, which lead to my buddy yelling "THEY'RE STORMING THE BUILDING!" and open fire. I make it up the stairs just in time to see him cap the last civilian and both Kane and I yelled "What the gently caress?!" at the other guy. That game was way too good to be the piece of poo poo it was. I hope it gets a third game. Daktar posted:I started playing again with the new expansions, and I got one of the most interesting characters I've had in a long while. She was declared a suspected witch and the spawn of Satan. Good start, no? I loving love stories from Paradox games.

My favorite part of Dead Space 3, hell the only part I really like, is that during the co-op only side missions Carver sees and hears poo poo that Isaac doesn't. For the entire first mission I didn't realize that until the very end when my friend told me to get away from some creepy kid or something that just did not exist. The whole time he was asking me "did you hear that" I just assumed it was something outside the game. Really seems like it could make for a great mechanic in a co-op horror game, if there were any good ones.
