Most of the side characters disappear abruptly and have no relevance to anything. Rohan was especially egregious, since they kept playing up his deep personal connection to the events in Morioh and then dropped the plotline entirely. Probably because Araki forgot about it, like so many other plothooks. It's still entertaining because crazy fights and silly poses are always entertaining, but it just isn't as sharp as some of the other parts.

There's still, consistently, a plot driving the characters except for the chapters between Red Hot Chili Pepper and Harvest. There are also a number of shonen series that are episodic in nature. It's a hybrid, but the story doesn't hold itself together as cohesive, in part because of this.

Part 4 just wasn't constructed to be one story, or even two stories, and that's fine. I don't see what the big loving deal is if it isn't cohesive to some people. That's the very thing that makes it one of the best: one of the characters could just go off and meet a weird dude with a Stand and do some poo poo with them for a few chapters for no reason other than it was fun or a good fight. It's not that I don't like Araki's more structured plotlines (I've said before, Steel Ball Run beats out Diamond is Unbreakable in pretty much every way), it's just that Diamond is Unbreakable is a different thing and it's something Araki is obviously really good at. JoJolion has taken an interesting position, channeling DiU and making it more cohesive, since we meet a lot of really odd Stands and Stand Users, but it's all serving a central point, even if the opponent isn't involved at all (like that street that had a Stand because who the gently caress knows).

I really didn't like the street Stand because I had just caught up and was jonesin for more JoJo, and waiting for months for a "filler" battle to conclude felt like cruel torture. In general I haven't been quite as hyped about part 8 as most people in this thread seem to be, I feel like the whole "get to know the Higashikatas" section was poorly paced at times despite the occasional tidbits of plot info. Thankfully the introduction of Jobin and the rockmen has given the story some focus now.
