My biggest hurtle is spending so much money on something that will be replaced the year after and possibly hard to sell. And if the bands aren't compatible well then gently caress. And that's not out of the realm of possibility given how many different chargers and cables apple goes through.

Well generally the 1st gen dies off the quickest, so wait for the 2nd which will probably be a much better product and last a lot longer. That's what I'm hoping for.

I was more talking along the lines of computer sales overall, at the time the tablet market was tiny, saying that Apple owned 95 percent of the market doesn't really mean much when they only needed to sell 3 million units to get to that point (For reference Apple sells around 12-13 million iPads per quarter now), iPad sales only really started getting going around the time the iPad 3 came out which was the first iPad to have, you guessed it, the retina display.
I remember Apple touting it as the fastest selling device ever, and looking it up, it sold 3 million in 80 days. In the first two years it was up to 55 million.

Well it's lighter than the others...I just remember reviewers complaining that the iPhone 5 felt cheaper cause it was so light. I guess it depends if you equate weight to quality.

It is; but, for whatever reason, I think it's going to be harder to flip a watch than a phone, or computer. Those are really the only tech things I buy (both from apple). I don't feel like televisions or game systems come out that fast. Apple didn't even use to come out with a new phone every year.
As long as it still works you should be able to flip it. Unless it bombs completely and no one wants it, but hey on the plus side you won't want to get a new one anyway if that's the case.

This was asked of me two pages ago when I said that there are some features that make the watch seem like it would be cool to own (at around 350 bucks maybe and 1000+ definitely not).

I live in NYC and I'm constantly listening to music with headphones on walking around. Every time I get a text or need to check how many more blocks away something is or relying on Siri to understand when I ask her to play an obscurely named Powerviolence band are all things that the Watch could remedy. Glance down at my watch - the coffee shop I'm on my way to is two more blocks up and to the left. If I'm out for a run and I want to change music I can do it more precisely on my Watch than I could with Siri, and instead of pulling my phone out of my pocket with sweaty hands and fumbling with the screen.

These may seem terribly specific but I can only speak from my own experiences, not everyone will find these same things useful at all. I feel that the inherent usefulness of the Apple Watch will be to limit the amount of time you spend using your phone for really quick actions. I've recently become one of those "I should try and stare at my phone less" people so while I'd still be looking at a device, I would be doing so with more specificity. Some people are in the camp of "oh it's just two seconds who gives a poo poo?" But all of those two-second interactions add up.

I live in NJ and work in NYC too, I had a Moto360 for a while, and it was really fantastic to be able to just glance at the watch and see/control music, as well as a see and respond to texts. I'm constantly terrified that if I pull my phone out of my pocket someone will bump into me and knock it out of my hand and break it. I've had my headphones hooked several times by people walking past and my phone yanked out of my pocket, I use bluetooth headphones with a status display now, but it was really nice having everything on my wrist. I also sent quite a few texts and emails with it. I biked with it (although not often because of the leather band) and it was really cool to see directions on it.

That said, the watch was really neat, but it just felt to 1st generation so I returned it, hoping to maybe see if gen 2 is better.

I disagree, most of the tick updates have been internal updates except for touchID. 3G > 3GS was speed, 4 > 4S was Siri/speed/fixed antenna, 5 > 5S was speed and TouchID.

For tock updates, 2G > 3G was the addition of 3G, 3GS > 4 was retina display, 4S > 5 and 5S > 6 was speed/screen size.

One of the most surprising things, for me, about the Apple Watch configurations, is that there are finite models being offered. For example if you want a space black watch with a black rubber band that's only available in a Sport model. The black stainless steel regular edition doesn't come in that configuration. I just finished watching the announcement from the other day and they didn't talk about swapping bands at all. I'm sure it's a thing but it's not a thing they touched on. Probably because they want you to buy their configurations and not think about swapping out your own band at all.

e: Also, Jony Ive sounds like he's using too many syllables when he says "aluminum."

I stand corrected. Allow me to rephrase: I'm surprised that you can't just pick which model watch you want and then choose a band to go with it, all in a customized ordering experience like you would swap components of a Mac or choose a color and carrier for iPhone. Instead they specifically state that the Watch is available in 20 models, the Sport in 10, and the Edition in 8.

Also, the naming scheme is terrible.

"Hey I just got an Apple Watch"
"Oh cool you went for the stainless steel one?"
"No I mean I got the cheap Sport one"

"Hey I just got an Apple Watch"
"Oh which edition did you get? The sport, the regular, or the edition?" (except jk nobody real is going to have to ask someone if they got the Edition)

Having to call the regular one "regular" makes it seem almost like a shittier version. But all in all it doesn't matter because they'll sell a bunch of them and even one Edition Watch is worth over a dozen iPhones.

You're right in the sense that these are aspects of the device that may be improved but how much a difference is that going to make with a device such as a watch? Phones are a different scenario where improvements in those aspects are enormously significant but not necessarily as much with a wearable device.

I think the life cycles will be more comparable to consoles, not phones.

It's neat and all, but I have the same issue with many gadget purchases; what about when the battery no longer holds a charge? That will happen and relatively soon for the device. At least with your iPhone it has a planned obsolescence, you 'upgrade' to the newer model which is subsidized by your carrier. Also, laptops and tablets you can tether it to an electrical outlet, but for a strictly mobile device like this it becomes an expensive paperweight.

Granted, your fancy mechanical watch will need servicing or your quartz watch will need a new, cheap battery, but when will people admit this is a disposable item? An expensive $10,000 special gold disposable watch?

Edit: NM, The battery is replaceable

Bullshit. People are going to swap anyway. Apple just wants you to buy a pre-"designed" configuration and eliminate the choice of buying just a watch body and using your own strap.

The click wheel owned :colbert:

But yeah while I'd expect the usual improvements, the usable lifecycle will probably vary a bunch by user. Like if you primarily use it for notifications then it should be fine for a while without really needing to upgrade (barring battery life not being good enough), while fitness folks could make good use of extra battery life and/or new sensors and what not. And that's where bands come in, even if you don't feel the need to buy a new watch, hey here's this fancy new strap for just a bit more!

I just realized that apple is going to make a fortune selling every apple watch buyer two watches. The edition users wont exercise in theirs, but still want to track their "standups" etc, so edition + sport will become the norm. Everyone getting a steel case watch will be a true devotee and want 24 hour life coverage for things like sleep and just to avoid the fear of low battery and not having heartbeat access to you lover, so they'll add a sport at checkout.

The sport people, well they aren't really people but since there will be no way to hide porn on your watch they'll all keep a discrete 38mm case without a band in their pocket as a watchporn porn watching repository.

Also Belkin or whoever is going to make a fortune if they can be first to get a pocket watch chain up onto the apple.com store.
