The Australians also have a huge amount of 'informal' votes because people tick a box instead of writing numbers. They only need to write '1' if that's the only candidate they want to rank. Compulsory voting doesn't help either. Also, Vagabundo, did that kayaking teacher that died today teach at your school?

Aren't like 90% of votes in some sort of party recommended order or something? Last election someone told me that most people vote above the line on the paper and don't actually do the ranking thing.

Yeah, in Aus on election day there are party volunteers outside every voting place that hand out how-to-vote cards. That can lead to parties with miniscule numbers of first pref votes (e.g. that one car enthusiast party) getting into office because of the way the big parties order their preferences.

Why do you have to order every candidate? I thought in STV you can order your top however many, and then the rest are ranked last equally? Is it just to prevent STV from regressing into an FPP system if everyone just puts a "1" and nothing else?

Butt Wizard posted:Also, Vagabundo, did that kayaking teacher that died today teach at your school? Yeah, everyone on staff was pretty much in shock. I just started thinking about a conversation Louise and I had about her plans to kayak in Europe later this year and it felt like getting hit in the stomach. We had parent-teacher interviews, and it was almost unbearable. It was pretty much a freak one-in-a-million accident that killed her. edogawa rando fucked around with this message at 14:21 on Mar 12, 2015 |

His story's changed a few times, first the upgrades were always planned but they didn't get to announce them during the election because of Dotcom and Hager; then they would go ahead even if Winston won, and now this. Polling must not be good.

He's a big soft oval office who does nothing but masturbate all day and post compulsively. He had to lose 20kg just to make the fight - he might lose some paunch but he's gonna be soft and weak. I'd be in favour of Slater being dealt some non-recoverable brain damage or other disability. Could only improve him as a human being.

Well, you see, he's not threatening to pull his pork barrel spending. He's merely reminding the voters of Northland that if National loses that election then it can't pass bills without those mean other parties who hate Northland voting on them.
