Sonatine is one of the most beautifully shot movies I have ever seen. Dark, funny, heartwarming. Violent. I'm still really apprehensive about watching Dredd since the leaked script I read was revolting as gently caress. Someone say nice things about its aesthetic so I can work up the courage to watch it.

It's very well shot, doesn't overly rely on quick takes, and if you can view it in 3D, I think it's one of the most artistically realized uses of 3D I've seen. Seriously, the Slo-Mo effect in 3D is just beautiful. Was it shot in 3D or was it all post-production?

I just watched A Company Man and it was a very well shot and cool looking film overall. The story wasn't bad but a bit predictable but I mean you should know what to expect when getting into Gangster movies at this point. There was one action scene that kind of felt flat and also didn't look near as good as the rest of the film. It's almost like someone else shot it or they used different cameras and direction for it.

Dredd is an awesome sci-fi/action movie, with some decent superficial social commentary, and it has a sense of humor about what it is. It's got a lot of pretty scenes, well done action sequences and lots of gore. I really liked Karl Urban's unwavering embodiment of the justice, completely detached from ethics or morality. He enforces the law, such as it is, no more, no less. Basically every line he has is an over-the-top action hero one-liner, and he plays the character well. Also it passes the Bechdel Test. For all its bloodshed and carnage, the film does not hypersexualize women, refreshing for a mostly mindless action flick.

Yes, there were some making-of trailers you could probably find on youtube that show the insane camera rigs they used. Its like the only movie that really needs to be seen in imax 3d. The director even said his intent was to turn ultra-violence into art.

The best part about Dredd is that it doesn't spend more than a few minutes telling you about the setting upfront, since you learn about that stuff throughout the movie. Just go to a comic book store and find the first in whatever collected series of Judge Dredd comic books they have. If it seems cool, you'll probably like the movie. If you liked Starship Troopers and RoboCop, it's like those but more violent and bleak.

PriorMarcus posted:What was so revolting? IIRC, it read as being incredibly mysogynistic with regards to anything involving Mama, and her death scene in particular reads as if the writer was getting off on it . Like, the script has a strong vibe of being written by a guy with some seriously hosed-up views towards women in general, and who is doing a really, really bad job of repressing said issues. For what it's worth though, I went in with pretty much the same apprehensions and didn't have a problem with the film itself.

Man after spending the usual 30 minutes on Netflix trying to figure out what movie to watch I had decided between Sonatine and Infernal Affairs. I went with Infernal Affairs. Really wish I had chose the other. Especially since the night before I watched New World so it felt like I was watching the same movie over again, except I liked all the characters in New World better.

Huh, I'd never heard that about the script before. I can see how a lot of the film, under a different director or when written with a misogynistic voice could be pretty revolting.

For what it's worth though, I went in with pretty much the same apprehensions and didn't have a problem with the film itself. Mama is an interesting, disturbing, and genuinely sympathetic villain in a lot of ways, probably thanks to Lena Headey pretty much always playing that type of role really well. It could be that if they had a different actress it would've come across as much more misogynistic. In a similar vein does the original script have Judge Anderson turning the tables on Wood Harris when he fantasizes about hurting her? Because that owns and definitely lifts the movie above misogynistic right when you think it's going to go there.

Here's a weird one: What's good on Netflix that doesn't actually have to be watched? I just had a minor eye procedure and I'd like to be able to set the iPad beside my bed and listen to something with my eyes closed. I've already burned through my backlog of podcasts and an audiobook, I'm not picky at the moment.
