No but I often play with my 3DS sitting holding it in my lap, not on a stand on the table, so it does move around quite a bit and the IPS screen and the face-tracking 3D are both godsends.

Plus as crazy as this may sound, sometimes I'm playing with a friend and like to glance at their screen from time to time, and would prefer to see the screen and not some ridiculous jumbled headache.

Its more like valkyria chronicles than XCOM really.
Just play the demo if you're curious.

If you want XCOM on 3DS, check out Ghost Recon. Its surprisingly good and plays exactly like XCOM, unlike STEAM.
You should be able to get it used at gamestop for $5.

It's like a weird blend of Vakyria Chronicles and Xcom- VK-style free movement with Xcom mechanics. Like if you just removed all of the free movement and gave it a classical SRPG control scheme it would be basically Xcom I think.

Ghost Recon is a great game to try if you like Xcom. The original Xcom dude even oversaw the game!

It's 2006. I am taking 276 yeti furs from the goodies hoard.
The demo and then impressions of the full game took me from super hyped about Codename STEAM to not-remotely-interested. It looks really really bad, like Valkyria Chronicles with blander maps and enemy variety and none of the interesting character progression. Nice to save $40, I guess, but still kind of a bummer -- I wanted it to be good!

I got my first streetpass today! I dropped my dad off at the train station and decided to take along my n3DS to see if I could get some people and I got one plus Abe Lincoln as a promotion for Codename: Steam. Did I get Abe because I got the streetpass from someone, was I near a Nintendo Zone, or did everyone get him over wifi?

Also, I'm interested in Shovel Knight. Is it cross-by with Wii U? Are the Wii U and 3DS versions any different? What should I play it on?

They aren't cross-buy, but they are the same exact game. Only difference is that 3DS has 3D, Wii U has Miiverse.

Yes. It's really bad. Enemies will walk one way, turn around, head back and then position themselves/attack. Then it moves to the next enemy unit and then some. I just have random videos up and barely pay attention because of how long it takes.

Also there's escort quests. The first one isn't bad at all but I can see it being a pain later when it comes back up. The game isn't bad but there's a lot of stuff I'm seeing making me go "this is gonna be annoying later on."

Also controls aren't bad at all? I wrapped up the second mission and taking a break but I've never really had any problems at all.

Actually I have some time so here's some thoughts on Codename S T E A M

Graphically it's great. The characters look good and the setting is really fun and interesting. The biggest problem I find really are the characters faces and a few panels (Lion's excited panel I can't even tell what the gently caress he's doing) when characters are talking. Thankfully you very- very rarely see them as your glancing at the characters back most of the time. Alien designs are pretty good and in the 6 levels I played I've run into 5 or so different types. No idea if it peters out soon or what but variety seems to be alright.

Music is good. I like it, it's got a intense air around it and when a enemy comes into view it picks up and swells- the aliens all have their own level-by level theme as well mostly sounding well... alien. I like it a lot sample.

Gameplay as everyone knows by now is based on a grid. Moving forward a square costs steam and you can backtrack to refill the steam so you can go around collecting coins or what have you before moving on. Some enemies have overwatch which is represented by a red bar- if you alert a enemy the red bar will slowly rotate to you and if it connects you'll get shot and if your shot you have a good chance of getting staggered loosing the rest of that turn (and overwatch) You really need to be prepared when it comes to collecting. Also yes, enemy turns take forever. You can speed the enemy turns up by holding select but it's almost unnoticeable.

On maps you can find gears, and gears unlock different boilers which can do various things from what I understand to giving your units more armor but less attack- more steam to move but you lose overwatch etc. You can also make new weapons (or unlock them rather) to give to your units. Each character has a unique weapon exclusive to them but you can swap the sub-weapons you unlock between whoever you want- but only one person can have that weapon at a time. I made a ninja star shooting gun for example- if I equip it to Henry that means Lion can't use it to. Different loadouts give you different options.

Missions from what I've played all give you a goal square to reach and the game scores you on how good you are at mopping up aliens while getting there safely. One mission I mentioned before had me escorting a NPC who would move after enemy turns and the mission wouldn't end till she got to safety so it changed the stratagem needed up quite a bit. I'm also aware at some point you will pilot a giant mecha Abe Lincoln and have sick first person robo fights (it's in the online multiplayer)

I'm probably missing a bunch but those are my unorganized impressions if they help anyone. Also I like that the story is actually a kids comic book he's reading. It's a charming game with a lot of love put into it but it's certainly got the new IP shackles on it.

I took my old 3DS with me on a road trip to Sea World (including into Sea World itself), I got a ton of Streetpass hits on that trip.

New technology baffles my mother, so trying to explain Streetpass to her was interesting.
"So how did you get that person's data? Did they hack your Game Boy? Is it personal information? What do you mean you wanted to trade information with strangers?" :ohdear:

If you're at any sort of convention you can just sit around in a fairly trafficked area and get hundreds of street passes in a few minutes. If I go out walking around the city I get a few here and there, and if you go anywhere that sells videogames or generally attracts nerds you're pretty much guaranteed to get a pass or two.

I think its dumb because the only person I ever streetpass is my roommate and MAYBE a friend of mine.

I'm sure in Japan its fantastic, but not here :911:

I'm so excited about taking it on a trip for the first time next month. I'll be hitting 3 airports! I didn't realize until I got my first streetpass today that you need to buy the other games from the rabbits. I'm not even close to done with the puzzle pieces and I just started that dungeon rpg game.

Honestly, I've been enjoying Mii Plaza and Face Raiders more than any game I paid for on the thing. I love watching family watch me smiling and spinning around the room shooting ridiculous versions of their faces. Feels like some good old Japanorama.

Streetpass is great for college and Japan. It sorta sucks at cons, because of the limit. The few times I've gone to them, I was glued to my 3DS just clearing out the queue and collecting puzzle pieces the entire time; not socializing, not... doing whatever people do at cons... watching anime in a little hot smelly room? idk

I've only been to big cons, though. I imagine it'd be cool for a smaller one where you only get a few dozen Streetpasses at most. I know the last one I went to, my roommate and I got the "100 Streetpasses in one day" trophy.

Streetpass is pretty cool in concept, and I can't even complain about the execution either. You just rarely get the opportunity to use it in the US outside of specific situations. But if you made it online or something instead of in person it would kinda defeat the whole point.

Playing STEAM and I finished up the first chapter or whatever you wanna call it. I think it's a good game mechanically but the Alien Movement really is abysmal. I heard it was bad and braced myself but oh my lord it is far worse then I thought.

Biggest problem I had was in mission 3 when I noticed there were infinitely spawning enemies. In a game like this who thought that was a good idea? First two maps lacked infinite spawns so hoping it's a rare thing but that alone has me a little nervous.

Playing chapter 1 again but I'm having the same problem as in the demo: Is there any way to start the first round of 1-3 that doesn't end with you getting swarmed? Between Henry & John there's just not enough shots to set off enough TNT to get any breathing room.

FYI that Abe Lincoln went out to everyone over wifi if nobody answered you.

I love Streetpass too. Sure there's Homepass to cheat your way into puzzle pieces and there's nothing wrong with that, but nothing compares to the "high" of getting one from a live person in proximity to you. I try to keep my 3DS in my truck at all times (got a super handy 3ds usb charger) and I'm always surprised at where I get streetpasses. I consistently get them from a physical therapy place in town as well as from the Wal-Mart area (lots of stores close by including Gamestop)

It's always fun meeting the same person again and getting to exchange personal messages too.
