Baron von Eevl posted:I think you nailed it. I thought the concept sounded great and somebody explained it to me as They Live meets that one Treehouse of Horror bit with Paul Anka. Instead it turned out to be a less visually stimulating Escape From Tomorrow without even the gimmick of being shot in Disney. This is what I wrote about it in the movie rating thread Branded F This might be the stupidest movie I've ever seen in my entire life. I don't like marketing and advertising at all so it's really not hard to appeal to me with a movie that's against those concepts but this movie just doesn't know anything about anything. Marketing as it's portrayed in this is so removed from how it actually exists that the movie ends up saying nothing because there isn't a thing it's trying to say can be applied to reality. It's a movie that just says stuff that it assumes is true. A character with a straight face gives a speech about how Lenin created marketing. What the gently caress are you talking about Branded? Is there anyone on Earth that wouldn't see that and go "I'm pretty sure that's bullshit..."? The dialogue in general is amongst some of the worst I've ever seen. The movie is so silly and so nonsensical that I almost want to like it but no, it just ends up just being boring and it makes me side with marketing which is a position I hate this movie so much for putting me in. I mean how am I supposed to react when the evil marketer's evil plan is making it so people are no longer ashamed to be fat? Am I supposed to be aghast at the concept that fat people in this society aren't ashamed of themselves anymore? This movie doesn't even really ever make a case of why marketing is bad beyond a brief and bad "it makes you want stuff you don't need". Nothing in this movie makes sense and it's all so terribly proud of itself that I just want to punch it. It's put together in such a nonsensical, haphazard way. The editing is terrible and it often does annoying things for no good reason. Oh and the acting is bad too. It's not entirely the actors fault given the awful dialogue they have to work with but everyone is just bland and the romantic part of the plot is as badly handled as can be, never really showing why these characters like each other so much. I just...this is a bad movie.

Lol, but that's not what you said: Cognac McCarthy posted:I don't know, if you look at rap from the era, it's not actually that much better. I think slow, predictable, ultimately lame put-down rap is sort of just what was around at the time. And you were wrong. Even "You Talk Too Much" is not, like, just 'a couple steps above' corny white dudes appropriating rap music to shallowly appeal to white kids and turn a quick buck on a product that is already just a gender-flipped version of Teen Wolf. "Fight the Power" dropped in the same year, dude. And, as others have said, even if you don't particularly care for Run-DMC, Boogie Down Productions and N.W.A. both dropped majorly influential records at that time. The entire Hip Hop culture was on the verge of a Renaissance that would explode in the '90s with the Native Tongues movement on the East Coast and the gangsta rap/G-Funk movement on the West. Teen Witch is reflective of sanitized perceptions of Hip Hop that were outdated when it was made, and only don't appear so because corny white Hollywood shills don't actually care about the music or culture.

I don't know why you think I disagree with any of this. I'm just not surprised at Teen Witch's badness, given what some high profile and successful rap was like even in the second half of the '80s, and given Hollywood writers' typical racial makeup and carelessness. This is a dumb derail, I just wanted to make a joke about how "You Talk Too Much" has aged badly.

Are there any sites renting It Follows? I was gonna go see it today until I realized it's only playing in NY and Hollywood. Seems like one of those movies that would have a streaming release but I'm not seeing anything.

Looks like season 2 of Rectify just went up on Netflix and it's one of the most well written, haunting dramas I've ever watched. It's very Southern Gothic so if that's your thing check it out.

Seriously, I don't know why I don't hear people talk about this show more. The acting is incredible, pretty much across the board, and the actors are given a lot to work with. It's beautifully shot too. It is one of the only shows I have ever seen that like, makes me tear up once per episode (and I don't do this usually, it's not sentimental, just really hauntingly sad). I don't even want to talk about the story itself because I think that people should just go in blind but... Just watch Rectify.

I loved every second of it the three or four times I watched it, usually in one sitting. I'll agree that Season 2 is tad bit less perfect but it's still very very good and better than 99% of anything else on. An old friend of mine worked as a set dresser (no idea what that person really does) on season 1, not sure about season 2. I need to track her down to see if she can give me the inside scoop on anything. If you can't tell I loves me some Rectify. I can't wait until the 3rd and final season sometime this year. Seriously, watch Rectify.

I liked Rectify but I'd cool the hype jets a little bit. It's good television with a lot of solid moments but the story is fairly straightforward and it seems to be missing some kind of spark/mystery that really drew me into it. I'm looking forward to season two but not scrambling for it.

I can't find the clip on YouTube but the scene where Daniel explains his prison rape to Teddy is not hyperbolically one of the best scenes I have personally watched on a television program. I know it sounds like hype but for me the show, and especially season 1, is just a loving incredible meditative thing that I have watched at least 4 times all the way through, which is not something I can say about many movies and even less TV shows.

The whole thing has this really fantastic nightmarish undertone, and having Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek star alongside each other in the same movie is a dream. I've never heard of this so I just watched it. It was really something. Reminded me a lot of Picnic at Hanging Rock (not on Netflix unfortunately). Thanks for the recommendation!

Well, that's the thing. I agree with you that that was an amazing scene, and there are lots of them. But for some reason the show as a whole falls doesn't build up momentum. You know exactly who the antagonists are, people with the exception of Daniel himself act a bit predictably, etc. Maybe it's a lack of tension? Hard to put my finger on it.

Finished both seasons of Bates Motel. Can't say I was as fond of it as a lot of the thread. It was moderately entertaining, but overall just seems like a pretty mediocre show. it felt like a WB teen show with a lot more rape to me. Also, my god that show had some of the worst making out/sex scenes, and the loud sloppy kissing noises were like nails on a chalkboard.

If you have cable or a cord-cutter 'borrowing' someone's provider login, check out Turner Classic Movies. You can watch the live feed of the channel online. On 3/19, they're airing 7 movies from Bert I. Gordon. He's a b-movie god. If you've watched lots of MST3K, you've seen his stuff.

It's pretty good - not tremendous or anything, but worth watching. It's a crime drama set in Germany and it's all fairly grim and unhappy - someone gets murdered, people aren't thrilled about it, etc. Good performances all around.
