Wow, that's cool! Small world, really :v: I know of at least four other goons who have attended the WvB :ssh:

But to be honest, the newspaper articles etc don't tell the whole story. The school was started in 1970, only one year after the moon landing when von Braun was a big loving name, and it had a mathematic and scientific slant from the very beginning, so it wasn't too surprising that they chose that name in 1979. Both my parents (who went there from the mid 70s-mid 80s) told me that there were comparatively little arguments concerning the name. This was something that seems to only have come up in the 90s. Those discussions were always cyclical, though: they came up, went on for a couple of weeks or months and then ebbed away again. I started there in 1997, and two years later (when the school celebrated 20 years of being named after WvB), there was the biggest and most passionate discussion yet. The school reacted by commissioning the then 10th grade (iirc) to create an exhibition concerning von Braun, whis was a permanent feature in front of the Mehrzweckraum. I can't say that this topic was made obligatory to speak about during the lessons, though. Somtime during the early 00s the school also changed its logo: before it had been a reddish streak in front of a blue-black background, which was supposed to symbolise the Saturn rockets going to the Moon, but someone realised that it could also stand for the V2 missiles hurtling towards London across the Channel :v:

Things only started to heat up when the powerful chief editor of the Augsburger Allgemeine started to have a private feud for whatever reason with the school's director. The editor started to massively slam the school whenever he could, pushing a topic which before had been mostly local in nature to a national level. Suddenly everybody and their dogs were covering this story, and the school simply didn't know what to do and decided to try and weather the storm. Basically the plan was to wait until the story had blown over and then try to figure out whether keeping the name really was worth it, so that the school wouldn't appear to have crumbled under pressure.

Which turned out to be a bad idea, of course.

The media frenzy in our hometown was quite astonishing, Reporters and camera teams were hanging out around the school grounds, and there was hardly a single day without some sort of coverage. Some of the reporters resorted to not-so-cool measures like stupid gotcha questions or suddenly screaming at and insulting pupils to elicit a reaction. I was told that one reporter was to conduct an interview with the SMV who were quite startled when instead of doing so in a matter-of-fact manner he came off as super aggressive, literally yelling at them. He was then thrown out and continued to write about the Nazi school banning the hero reporter because he dared to ask the hard questions.

For a month or two, there was a deep fracture line going right through the city, and everywhere I went people argued about that one topic. It was a pretty cool time in that regard, actually - finally people cared about something political! The vast majority of pupils felt unfairly treated by the media and opted to keep the name (there was a survey by the SMV and something like 95% of the student body voted for keeping it), probably for the most case out of spite. The school tried to organise a symposium concerning WvB and actually did a really great job with it, but it was too little and too late: nobody cared about the efforts of the school to turn the problematic nature of its name into an opportunity to learn about German history and the ambivalence of man anymore, simply writing about the Nazi school and complaining about increasingly absurd things like that the fact that it had been a whole two years (gasp!) since pupils from the school had visited Mittelbau-Dora was a sure sign that everybody in Friedberg was a Nazi sympathiser. Idiots like the quoted teacher (who not without reason was called "Giftzwerg" by us, even though I have to admit that he probnably is no right-winger, but a natural science supremacist instead) didn't help.

In the end it was inevitable: while the pupils wanted to sit it out, a slight majority of the teachers and most of the Elternbeirat voted to abandon the name, which the school did in January 2014. Many a tear was shed that day by frustrated and angry 14-year olds... but there was no way around it: either keep the name and be stuck with the reputation of a Nazi school for the rest of time, no matter whether it is true or not, or give it up. It was quite interesting to see: While both me, my brother and our parents (all former pupils) were for abandoning the name because it wasn't worth it, my younger brother (who still goes there) was a passionate defender of it, for purely emotional reasons.

In the end I have to say that it is an unanimously good thing that we gave up this highly problematic name. On the other hand, it was quite astounding to see just how far reporters would go to create a story, and so it came to no surprise to me when I for exampe read that reporters would pay kids in a heavily Muslim neighbourhood in Duisburg to wear Al-Quaida shirts in front of the camera. Same thing, just even more hosed up.

And that's the story of my former school. You can wake up again now :v:

Oh yeah, quantum_squirrel: you still in the area? We definitely have to share a beer, at least when the next Altstadtfest comes up again

The enrolment at my school when I started there was at a record low; I was one of only about 50 pupils, two classes, which is insane even for a self-styled elite (but public) Humanistisches Gymnasium. As I found out a little later (I didn't care too much back then, and this excuses any fuzzy details), there had been a so-called "weapon scandal" the year before so parents were disinclined to send their kids to such a dangerous ghetto school.

The fact: one pupil had tried to sell another one during sports class an airsoft or somesuch gun. That's it.

Someone on the local newspaper had blown the story up, however, making it seem like it was a full-blown arms trade among pupils, really ridiculous stuff. Turns out the responsible reporter had actually been a pupil at the school...but had failed, and probably was still bitter.

There had been an actual "dangerously leftist" scandal at the school before, though! Just far before my time. A student was expelled for wearing a "Stoppt Strauß" emblem. But she probably had been a troublemaker before and that was just the last straw, right, guys? Maybe she had, like, three Verweise!

That also seems counterproductive as the signals can more easily penetrate the skull.

Well the old logo was very abstract, crayon drawn, featuring a red tail on blue ground. Maybe the fuel tail of a V2 approaching London Saturn lifting off... i had on an old Shirt, but alas I've grown too fat and the shirt went out...

But I found all my old year books and and it a discussion about Wernher-von-Braun for the 25 year jubilee of Wernher-von-Braun Staatliches Gymnasium Friedberg. I can scan it, if anyone is interested in Vergangenheitsbewältigung.

Pretty sure it still is. Rumour has it that once the authorities sent some experts to check the asbestos levels in the school (we had a lot of cancer cases amongst the teachers), but our cool&good director averted the school being shut down by having all the windows be continually opened for several weeks before the experts showed up, and the results were still only a hair's breadth below critical. No idea if it is true, though.

...our school kinda sounds like an utter shithole the way I tell it, doesn't it? :v:

It's rather obviously a meta troll. And Varoufakis is stupid enough to cite a German satirist to uphold his lie of never having flipped the finger. Though the video of Jauch was suggestive in the first place. Both, Jauch and Böhmermann, are a good example why only stupid people use TV as a mean for political information rather than political entertainment. Get a newspaper, morans!

Because there are different versions of this clip (the short one and a long one) on the net. Because the uploader claims not to have manipulated the video. Because eyewitnesses attending the lecture remember the finger (being shown twice). Because it would be quite a lot of work to create a video and upload it in the middle of February in the hope that a talk show in the middle of march would use this exact clip and not another one as an introduction. Because Böhmermann is a satirist and context means a lot. Because to cast a guy that looks like Varoufakis to make him a double for the finger is simply hilarious.

I do not watch TV and only live off the droplets that make it to the internet. But seeing this parody and the ensuing debate I can understand why so many people believe in Russia Today etc. even though it makes no sense at all.
