Doctor Spaceman posted:Yeah, the next scheduled election (after NSW this weekend) is NT in August 2016, which means the Federal poll might even be the next actual one. The latest the Federal election can be held is January 2017. Before that is NT and ACT in 2016. Thanks Google. Probably going to be a November 2016 Federal vote though methinks.

The Libs will probably lose the WA state election in 2016? But that's set to be after the Federal, iirc.

Abbott could have the election as late as mid January 2017. Which is within the realm of possibility because he's a megalomaniac that would try hold onto power as long as he can.

The biggest reason for an early election (like, June or July) would be a DD after the passage of a populist budget full of handouts. I don't think that's that likely though.

The budget will be hosed until the people decide they want to unfuck it so they will kick that can down the road I expect. With Abbott a festering anal fissure and the Treasurer being on par for intelligence with a talking monkey the best the Libs can hope for is the spotlight to sloooowly move over to Bill Shorten's game. I think at the moment his only claim to fame since the last election is screwing over Albo. Bill was no great shake under Gillard and the Government will be hoping for some slip ups.

The summary on the nightly news was that they got an increase of $60 (I think) a week and annual 3% increases in return for no overtime rates during the week (ha!) and only 50% on Sundays. And the option to 'refuse to work on the weekend' which is a bullshit concession as that should be the status quo anyway. So you've given up the right for more money, in return for being able to not work when you could have earned that money? Sick of all this 'in our modern day world businesses are trading 7 days a week' bullshit too. The point of a standard week is to have common days to rest, go out, socialise etc.. Ask anyone that does shift work or weekend work whether it effects their social life, the answer is obviously that it does.

To my knowledge there has never been a Federal election in January. I agree that it would a stupid move to have the campaign over Christmas, but wouldn't that suit the Liberals more than the rest? Lower voter turn out overall, but higher voter turn out skewed towards the older generations who vote LNP. In any case it's probably too hard to guess when the next federal election will be. There's just too many factors in the mix: leadership spill, angry electorate, DD however low possibility that may be. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if we're going to the polls by either this November or March next year.

my stepdads beer posted:What's the rules on unions in workplaces? Can a better union than the SDA start up in the same workplaces? Actually, having re-read the article it doesn't (necessarily) seem as horrible as I thought. The SDA have created a 'template' together with Business SA of what they think are 'fair' conditions for a retail enterprise agreement. They haven't affected the award or anything like that. Enterprise agreements are made directly between the employees and the employer, and they may have a union advising the employees and also helping represent the employees in the process of bargaining. But using a union is entirely up to the employees. So for any group of employees that are currently represented by the Shoppies this is a good time to tell them to gently caress right off, that they don't want to be represented by them and that for any bargaining they do in the future penalty rates will be off the table.

asio posted:They don't cover retail workers. They do however cover everyone from Short Order Cook to Hand-Setter (Mechanical Clocks) so you have to find something like that. They don't mind drawing long bows. I can remember someone once said there was another union retail workers could join besides the useless SDA. I think it was the NUW but finding which unions cover which jobs is surprisingly difficult. Most links lead to the ACTU - Which union for your job? page which lists all the unions but doesn't specify which unions do what. Sure, with a lot of them it's easy to figure out. Aust. Education Union, Aust Writers' Guild, Rail Tram and Bus Union, and so on. Google tells me more than 1.2 million people work retail in this country, surely they have someone willing to give them a voice? Mind you, I realise at this point I've probably spent more effort thinking about this today than most of the people working retail have. When you're young you just don't give a poo poo about this. Only once you're old enough to have been hosed over a few times do you realise how important it is to have someone in your corner. By then most have moved on to other jobs. But that's changing now, more and more. Go into a fast food joint or a servo and odds are the person behind the counter will be over 30. Anidav posted:Yes, A union knifed them and Labor came out supporting the Union publicly. New Matilda had this article: quote:Under the agreement the Sunday pay rate - which is normally double the base-rate - would drop to time and a half, while public holiday penalty rates would drop from double time and a half down to double time. Not quite as horrible as I thought. But the first comment (yeah, I know, reading comments) points out "Once penalty rates are gone what guarantees the wage rates in the long term?"
