Season 3 has to be the peak. Or at least the route to the peak. All of the mytharc episodes are actually good, you have 3 Darin Morgan episodes, and you have sweet-spot episodes like Syzygy and Pusher where you have this good mix of creepy and funny.

Yeah, the move to LA had to have entailed replacing a substantial amount of the Vancouver based crew. I think some other people were drained off to Millennium around the same time.

Really? I've been reading up on each ep on Wikipedia as I go through them and I read that the ep in S2 with the Satanists was their last before leaving to do Space: Above and Beyond and that's why there were so many in-jokes in the ep and the "It was nice working with you" message at the end.

There has to be at least some throwaway acknowledgement of the myth arc because the invasion should be in full swing by now. There has to be some explanation for why the colonists cancelled their plans or postponed them.

There's no reason why the new series shouldn't pick up after the second movie, preceding the invasion by as long as four years. Unless there's the possibility of more X-Files after this, I hope they don't take that route.

They don't need to explain a delay beyond maybe a line saying that Mulder and Scully's X-Files antics delayed them.

And yeah with how badly the last monster of the week movie went down there is no way this new thing isn't mythology heavy or mythology only.

I can't remember if Billy Connolly was a fake or not, but the main plot involved Russian head transplant surgeons and poo poo.

People were really annoyed that it wasn't about aliens/the conspiracy.

Probably. I'd say in general the X-Files is good right up until the Syndicate gets killed. After that the mytharc goes wayyyy off the rails and starts sucking. The standalones continue to be pretty good, though.

I'd love to see a season-long non-Mytharc X-file along the lines of True Detective, but apparently, that's not the direction they're going to go. We'll see, but I don't expect much.

Just finished Season 2. I know the mythology eventually goes to poo poo, but for now it's pretty interesting and I'm digging it quite a bit.

Favorite eps of S2 are probably Colony/End Game. Favorite MOTW ep was probably Humbug. Just super weird and actually kind of funny.

Least favorite ep of the season was Red Museum. Seriously, I don't even know what it was about.

So, they said they are starting filming this summer. I would guess that would put a release either this fall or late winter/early spring of 2016.

There are approximately 152 hours of x-files content to watch (if you include both movies). 2 hours a day would be about 76 days straight, so let's give it an even 3 months to watch everything to give a good buffer.

I better have my goddamn X-Files blu-rays by June at the earliest and August by the latest so I can binge in HD with listening to Kumail Nanjiani's podcast afterwards before these 6 new episodes hit.

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!
Only thing worrying me about a reboot is, how much work is already done on writing if they plan on starting shooting in June? Some of the old writing crew should be free. Frank Spotnitz recently got picked up by Amazon, Vince is working on Better Call Saul, Howard Gordon is working on something else for Fox. I think John Shiban, Glen & Darin Morgan, and James Wong are all potentially free. Directorial talent is also a question, since main man Kim Manners has since passed away.

Yeah, this is actually the main thing I'm excited about with the new episodes being announced.

e: I guess they might not plan on starting shooting then, since the announcement says "production" is to start in "summer", that was just the original rumor. Hopefully they take their time.

Chris Carter says they've been in talks since November. I guess it should have been obvious when Amazon dropped his show that The X-Files was looking pretty likely to start up again, hindsight is 20/20.

Buglord
People poo poo on the mytharc, but it'd honestly feel like bullshit if the 2012 date wasn't addressed. And this is speaking as someone who generally preferred MOTW eps over the mythology ones during the run of the series. I want that part of the story tied up, and it'd be preferable if Doggett and Reyes both showed up with more meat to work with so their arcs don't feel completely hollow.

I realize I'm probably more alone in that opinion, but, welp.

Yeah, this is what's been holding them up. They didn't want to release the blu-rays in 2014 and then turn up with new episodes almost two years later. They want them to be closer together.

Gotta say this is even better news than Longmire returning from the dead (and Heroes, but LOL Heroes). X-Files was one of the greatest shows of the last few decades. It pioneered modern serialized tv (as well as inventing the mytharc/MOTW scenario) and I can't wait to see what they do with it in modern television.

Maybe Michelle MacLaren would do an episode. She made her directorial debut on season 9 episode "John Doe," penned by Vince Gilligan (probably the best episode of the final season).
