Indeed. I've been told by coworkers how awesome Austin is before, but I just don't buy the "blue dot in a sea of red" pitch. Sure, the influx of young tech workers primarily from California has shifted city level politics to the left. Fine. You still have to deal with the conservative state government, not to mention shitheads like Abbott.

Also the weather is awful. Seriously: gently caress humidity.

California has its fair share of shitheads. Weren't you guys just talking about a dude who submitted a ballot proposal to kill gays?

We have plenty of shitheads yes, but our state government is overwhelmingly left leaning, whereas Texas'... isn't. :v: Also there's a difference between some random shithead lawyer abusing the ballot proposition system, and the governor of Texas himself being a shithead.

In either case, my point is more that even if places like Austin or Dallas are fairly blue, local governments can only do so much. Eventually, they're going to end up butting heads with the more conservative state government.

I dunno, all the Texans I know are all "'Murca!" people. Big flags and poo poo. Yet, they keep talking about leaving the US to form some terrible failed state. I support texas independence as long as they pay us back for the infrastructure. They're nearly tapped out of oil anyhow.

I lost track a couple years back, but I remember there being a kind of stealth implosion with the State finances in TX that the media was ignoring because it was too busy talking about CAs money woes and how taxes are bad for people. (Therefore everything TX does is good for people!)

But there's one state, which is fairly high up on the list of troubled states that nobody is talking about, and there's a reason for it.

The state is Texas.

This month the state's part-time legislature goes back into session, and the state is starting at potentially a $25 billion deficit on a two-year budget of around $95 billion. That's enormous. And there's not much fat to cut. The whole budget is basically education and healthcare spending. Cutting everything else wouldn't do the trick. And though raising this kind of money would be easy on an economy of $1.2 trillion, the new GOP mega-majority in Congress is firmly against raising any revenue.

So the bi-ennial legislature, which convenes this month, faces some hard cuts. Some in the Texas GDP have advocated dropping Medicaid altogether to save money.

So why haven't we heard more about Texas, one of the most important economy's in America? Well, it's because it doesn't fit the script. It's a pro-business, lean-spending, no-union state. You can't fit it into a nice storyline, so it's ignored.

No idea whats current though.

They currently have a budget surplus, actually. As do we. :toot: Granted, a lot of their surplus was built on the oil, and that ship is continuing to sink. Prices won't stay down forever, but if it continues out to the next budget cycle Texas is going to feel the squeeze.

The big upcoming issue for Texas' budget is actually that the current proposed budget doesn't spend all the money they have. Dems want to put the remainder into education and highway infrastructure. Abbott wants to use it to buffer tax cuts, and increase border security.

I wonder which way Texas will end up going?

Let 'em go gently caress up some private oil company, or Ebay, or something. The problem is that being autonomious is why the UCs have not fallen as far as the CSU system given the cuts.
Historically, it has been useful. For example, in the Reagan years it prevented him from firing people who took him on.
The whole this is a poo poo show between Brown and Napalitano. The tuition increases were really just a tool to try to increase UC funding. The legislature passed it and brown vetoed it.
Brown is absolutely correct that the UC has too much bloat, but the increases are certainly shared fault.

Could have to do with the state paying almost 1/3 the amount per student today than they did in 1974.

Good news though, the UC is cutting the admin bloat! A faculty assistant (who is classed as admin, but really is a researcher and is masters minimum and Ph.D preferred) just got a faculty position at UCD. She was previously paid $55k, which for a Ph.D ain't much. Her replacement? UC put a $35k per year cap on the job. For a STEM masters.
But next year, the spending will go down a whole $20k (or possibly 55k, as no qualified applicants have applied given the pay).

But how many places do you know where a community/neighborhood realizes and openly admits it has a racism problem and starts an open and constructive dialogue to try to fix it?

Sacramento doesn't have a right and wrong side of the tracks. It is a patchwork of several nicer and run down neighborhoods interspersed. You can't live here without at least acknowledging that there are different people and most of them are decent humans. California might try to require warrants before cops can intercept your cell phone: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/03/california-bill-requires-warrant-for-stingray-use/

quote:

A California state bill that would require a warrant to access all kinds of digital data passed its first hurdle after being approved by the Senate Public Safety Committee on Tuesday.
Among other sweeping new requirements to enhance digital privacy, the bill notably imposes a warrant requirement before police can access nearly any type of digital data produced by or contained within a device or service.

In other words, that would include any use of a stingray, also known as a cell-site simulator, which can not only used to determine a phone’s location, but can also intercept calls and text messages. During the act of locating a phone, stingrays also sweep up information about nearby phones—not just the target phone.

Of course, cops have issues with the new bill:

quote:

Vranicar told the committee that the bill would "undermine efforts to find child exploitation," specifically child pornography.

"SB 178 threatens law enforcement’s ability to conduct undercover child porn investigation. the so-called peer-to-peer investigations," he said. "Officers, after creating online profiles—these e-mails provide metadata that is the key to providing information. This would effectively end online undercover investigations in California."

Ars was unable to obtain the letters filed by Vranicar and McGuire to the committee that more fully outlined their opposition.

Sen. Joel Anderson was the only committee member to ask questions of the law enforcement officials opposed to SB 178.

However, no other members of the public nor other groups spoke up in favor of the law enforcement position.

Yes, Sacramento can get real hot during peak summer. But the nice part is most of the suburbs and Sacramento itself cool down nicely at night.

Further north and south in the valley are the struggling points, because the breeze coming through the delta doesn't make it that far. Going to Chico State, I experienced some real bad nights...like waking up at 2 or 3 am, still sweating in bed from the heat. too cheap to constantly run the A/C.
