I think I would say to my daughters if they were to ask me this question... A shitpost is the greatest gift that you can give someone, the ultimate gift of giving and don't give it to someone lightly, that's what I would say.

Berke Negri posted:

No new ground abilities even, this just seems like a "uh slap fifteen more points to this spec and we'll unveil a new line of ships to sell it with"

edit: so what's the point of the primary/secondary specializations now? if they're just going to make secondaries into full on primary specs that seems to be kind of at odds with the whole primary specs give bonuses to ground and space and then secondaries further defines your role in space or ground

If this allows you to entirely specialise in space, that sounds ok. Still a loving huge investment though.

You have one full spec and one half spec, basically. So pilot/intel is different than intel/pilot

Asimo

The problem is what Berke mentioned, where both Intel and Command were fairly evenly split between ground and space abilities, but Pilot isn't. So if you're in your space boat, it's objectively and outright superior to either of those. Presumably Commando will be the same way for ground if when they make it a full spec too.

It's not a big deal honestly, but the fact Cryptic is effectively obsoleting specializations people ground their asses off to get is a good demonstration of how they are completely oblivious to the metagame implications of their changes.

Also they assume pilot was super popular is because it was just really well designed and not because the only other option was a bunch of ground abilities and well "gently caress ground".

I'm really hoping they just add pilot slots to some of the existing ships. It'd be a good chance to buff some of the shittier ships already out there. The wording of the announcement seems like they might be going that route but everything they've done since Geko took over would indicate that another $120 bundle of crap ships is in the works instead.

As always just ignoring the new spec remains a valid option.

Boff seating
Tactical
Science
Engineering
Flexible (replaces Universal)
Specialist

There, done. Go back and apply to the T5 ships, change T5U to T6 with an upgrade path or something and apply. BOFF seating problem solved.

I'd been assuming that what they were doing with primary specs was putting into place actual "roles" that the playerbase seems to want so bad (intel as 'sneaky' flanking dps role, commander as tanking/group buff role, maybe a spec for healing, a spec for x, etc.) with secondary specs eventually providing more variance in the builds you want.

But nope, just slapping fifteen points on to pilot just kind of makes it seem they don't really have any plans.

It'll be funny if they make commando into a full on spec too, because what are they supposed to sell along with that? If it is a ground only spec not like they can sell ships with that.

Reclaimable C-Store ground set, like the (unupgradable) Chromodynamic Armor and old TR-116 no-clip no-scope rifle?

I asked about that, funnily enough.

(12:56:00 PM) FuturePastNow: Well it looks like pilot boffs only have space abilities, right? There aren't any pilot ground abilities?

(12:56:17 PM) Borticus: That's accurate. Pilot is Space-Only.

(12:56:26 PM) FuturePastNow: So if Commando got upgraded to a complete spec, it would have only ground boff abilities and kits

(12:56:52 PM) Borticus: But one of the primary reasons for us to make a primary spec, is for the Boff Seat, as it helps us make new ship variants which drive monetization.

(12:57:13 PM) Borticus: So there's minimal $$ payoff in a Ground-Only boff.

(12:57:30 PM) Borticus: And since our manhours are limited, that's a tough sell.

So not likely.

I watched a video of one of the new space STFs "The Gates of Grethor." Other than how painful it was to watch this guy, I was left with a couple impressions. It actually looks half-way interesting with some semi-intelligent gameplay needed by players. Therefore it will probably be crazy to pug it. Also, there are multiple time-oriented optionals for different phases of the fight. Without a good dps team, the higher difficulty versions are probably a sure-lose situation if they maintain hard failure options on it.

For fun, here's a group of people that are supposed to have decent dps barely winning on elite.

As I was recently reminded, debating on reddit is usually an unwise thing to do...

"Redditors" has since taken on a negative connotation as being a idiot who subscribes to quips, agrees with the majority and generally doesn't have a brain to think for themselves.

It will be so hilariously horrible if so.

Not least of which because the skills are basically made for a T6 Defiant.

MikeJF
Dec 20, 2003

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case, what with there being a T6 Voyager and a T6 Ent-D coming. It makes sense from a marketing point of view to have a Voyager, Defiant and Enterprise-D front and centre. Intel seats on the Voyager, Pilot seats on the Defiant, Command seats on the Enterprise-D.

Eh. It's not really anything new. When they had all the rewards for an episode up at once, people just ran it as many times needed on day one and that was that. This way they get that all special metric of people logging in doing something once per week instead. It's pretty much to Cryptic's benefit, but it's pretty harmless.

Granted the best option would be to go back to the old featured episode thing of a new mission per week, but that ain't gonna happen. :effort:
