I am retarded, so here's a quick question: is there any reason not to use a 64 bit linux for a VM? is there a magic amount of allocated memory where 32 bit is better?

yeah I'm just setting up an apache server, shouldn't be any legacy stuff involved

What is the best way to setup a static IP for accessing a specific domain? My mothers work is blocking her from working at home because of a dynamic IP and whitelist only website, their recommendation is setting up a dynamicDNS that would cover all of her internet traffic. Obviously this is stupid on many, many levels but since I can't change their IT security I was hoping I could setup a slightly more secure and easier to manage system for her. Atm I was thinking of renting a vpn with a static IP, but does anyone have better ideas?

so they use ip whitelisting to allow access but your mom has a dynamic ip? and they are willing to whitelist a dynamic dns hostname? why not just do that? The risk is entirely on their side who cares if your moms has a dynamic dns name? although presumably their firewall will do a reverse lookup on the incoming ip and the isp won't have a PTR that matches the dyndns so I don't see how that would work exactly but ehh..

ya thats what i was trying to do, but in order to copy something you have to select it first, and trying to select it locks it up. this is on an mbp with a new samsung 850 so its definitely not a bottleneck there. im just gonna run it in the background for a while and let it download everything iguess ps: found out yosemite broke TRIM on third party drives unless you disable kext signing lmfao

on every os x prior to yosemite you could enable it with "trim enabler" apps – which worked totally fine – but those modify kexts, and yosemite requires kext signing. you can still use those apps by disabling kext signing but besides being a security hole, it will stop your mac from booting if you reset pram or install any update that resets pram. there isnt any legit reason for it aside from apple being a whore and trying to force you into buying its overpriced ssds
