Kind of. They later corrected themselves slightly, basically saying that it would work but remain flagged as non-genuine in the process.

What's their plan for making money with it tho? They make it sound like it'll be free. "It looks like you're trying to write a letter. What to install some f2p iap clickfest and play that instead?"

they've had vague "free for the first year" type language

so eventually windows might be a yearly service like office 365?

and tbf microsoft knows it's not going to be able to make money from OS sales forever.

Their entire ideal plan since Windows 8 was essentially to get people into their ecosystem. If you get people used to using Windows Metro Apps then they'll want to get proper Windows tablets and Windows phones, and an Xbone so their Excel spreadsheets are all synced via OneDrive on all devices. And any app sales on the store Microsoft gets a significant chunk of the earnings from which is massive in the case of the iTunes App Store, for example.

Honestly the majority of Windows License purchases out there aren't really impacted by this decision. Medium-to-large enterprises are still paying for yearly SLA's giving them whatever the newest license is, and replacing their workstations every 3-4 years which by default comes with a pro version license anyway. And on the business and home sides very few people ever bought Windows upgrades anyway, and honestly it's more important to Microsoft that they (futilely) do whatever they can to prevent Windows 7 from becoming another XP.

nah, making money from OEMs is on the way out too

"OEMs who use Windows 8.1 with Bing must also include Bing as the default search engine and MSN as the default home page on any browser. The hope is that these services might bring in some more ad revenue, though users can always change the defaults on their own."

i'm like 99% certain that the version of windows 10 they'll be giving out for free is an upgradable home basic version with ads

microsoft is now giving away lync for free and it's still a flop

trade rags routinely mention its "high" operational costs. you know they're really in the poo poo when oblivious middle managers ditch microsoft

yes, but tbf it's not from microsoft, it's from RackSpace offering training for Lync. also peep the thread title.

i think this will go over very badly. when the xbox one came out people just kind of gave the benefit of the doubt that MS would push it on people with millions in advertising and the foothold gained with the xbox 360. strange as it is people over-estimate MS.

when the windows lock screen starts asking for a credit card number in 2016 some people will just switch to using their iPad for everything and put their laptop on Craigslist or in the attic forever. more technical people will re-install Windows 7 (gamers) and/or Ubuntu (developers). people with some coin will go and finally try Mac. I think you'll have to be pretty die-hard to pay for Windows.

but i guess a middle manager is phrasing the questions for the focus group just right so that they aren't realizing this.

Lync is garbage and proof microsoft can't even do a simple thing right.

you can't send offline messages to people. you can't send picture messages (unless IT does some weird thing). the whole window jitters and refreshes the chat when you resize it. it has to reload the chat even if you just scroll up or down a few lines. it's really hard to see someone's profile picture in full size. and in Windows 7 it stacks all your chats so you have to click the task bar icon, then search for the chat you want every time (no way to just open the whole Lync window).

it should work fine on both Mac and iOS, that's how I used it mostly. yeah most of my complaints are about the windows version actually, at least w/r/t the window/chat refreshing and the task bar poo poo.

although there was one connection issue where i had to put in a thing manually and do some snooping on the network to find out what the thing was.

why does microsoft insist on doing this, it's a terrible ui

paint.net adopted it too, but it can thankfully be turned off.

just imagine if every program (like ides) presented every open file as its own thing on the taskbar stack. visual studio doesn't do this, right?

the presence/messaging is the best part of lync, and it's pretty loving bad

the telephony is almost unimaginably terrible.

iirc you can make the taskbar function basically the same way it did in xp (assuming you're using windows 7) in taskbar properties

they probably removed this in 8+ because its too functional

i don't mind separate windows getting stacked. i just don't want the documents within that window to be presented on the taskbar.
