The mundane ones become the supernatural ones by the second sequel usually.

Myers may not be supernatural by traditional definitions but his origin story becomes increasingly supernatural to the point where Myers' spirit is eternal and he's some Frankenstein's monster created by a cabal of satan worshipers who control him with a magical tattoo and gently caress I DON'T KNOW.

There are probably more mundane slasher villains than supernatural ones, the supernatural ones just happen to be the most popular.

Uh, yeah, that's kinda what I said. 4 thru 6 were the cult ones (well really 5 and 6) with all the supernatural bullshit. They also turned the Myers house from some nondescript two floor house into a sprawling Gothic mansion.

H20 doesn't acknowledge the cult poo poo at all. They had some plans to, but it was deliberately cut from the film.

I much prefer H20 to the cult bullshit. Just a better film.

Jason's kinda weird. He was supposed to have drowned to death when he was 10, and it upset his mother enough that she went crazy, but then he actually was really alive and living as a hermit, and still cognizant enough to remember her after finding her corpse.

He got killed in 3, and resurrected as a zombie thing in 5, and pretty much went full supernatural otherwise.

Killed in 4 (The Final Chapter) and resurrected in 6 (Jason Lives), 5 (A New Beginning) was also non-supernatural and it seemed like they were aiming for a slight mystery, there's some little clues around that let you know what's going on, but it really requires hindsight, but they never really fleshed that out.

Man, I hated H20, Thorn Cult for life here. There's still some references to 4-6 in the intro though.

I can't remember did the upcoming Friday the 13th game get mentioned here? There's going to be an awful lot of competition in that previously unexplored niche.

I found this by accident but last month some youtuber did a Lets Play of SH2 with Guy Cihi, the voice of James Sunderland. Its pretty interesting and entertaining. Guy had never actually seen/played the game all the way through before so its all new to him, and he has lots of interesting stories from the development. They even decide to have Guy read all the memos and inner dialogue as James.

It's kind of an edge case of a movie that uses clear horror influences for certain scenes without necessarily being a horror movie. A lot of games have bits like that as well, like the Cradle in Thief: Deadly Shadows or the Sorrow bits from MGS3. Neither of those are horror games but those scenes are very clearly meant to be horror.

Does his mom qualify as a well known slasher villain who isn't supernatural? Or is she not well known, or at least not well known until the scene at the beginning of Scream.

Jason's pretty much completely overshadowed her to the point where I'd say it retroactively become a twist that Mrs. Voorhees was the killer in the original movie and not her son.

I was going to mention her earlier, but she's not really as iconic to the series as Jason is. Plus she only appears in the one movie (as more than a severed head, anyway) so she doesn't really have the franchise thing going for her. There are a lot of lovely one-off slasher movies with non-supernatural villains but typically when people say "Slasher movie" they're thinking of Friday the 13th/Halloween/Nightmare on Elm Street/Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc. The big multi-sequel franchises.

I haven't gotten that far into Alien: Isolation yet but I'm having some mixed feelings about it. Well, overall I like it but once you die and have to sit through level transitions and solved puzzles again it kinda breaks the mood, so I've started taking a break whenever I die more than once because otherwise I start sprinting whenever the alien appears, hoping to get away before the AI activates.
Actually I think the alien is the worst part of the game, at least when it's visible ,since it just shuts down an area and stops you from playing, while if it's in the vents you have free reign but you have to be careful and that is so much more atmospheric and plays a lot better. Hopefully that changes later since I just got to the medical area, and maybe I should use more of the distraction items.

One things that's really great is the ability to preallocate crafting materials even if you don't have all of them, so you never feel annoyed at leaving some in the boxes.

Medical is considered to be the area where it's just chained so closely to you that it shuts down an area like you described. Just power through that area and it gets much better.

I have a similar problem (well, the first part at least) with The Evil Within. There's some great moments in the game, which is good, because you'll probably wind up replaying them again and again due to the game being so stingy with its checkpoints. I tend to play til I die, then back on the shelf it goes for another while.

Oddly enough, they overused the Alien in Alien: Isolation. This applies to a lot of games and movies, but the most tense and frightening parts of the game are at the beginning, before you've even gotten a good look at the alien. But somewhere around the midway point, hiding from it starts to become a chore. It would have been better if they'd made it truly random, and have the alien actually disappear for periods of time, but nope, it's right on your rear end in every level that's set up for it to be. Once you get the motion tracker, it's just a matter of keeping your eyes glued to that, and a lot of the tension is gone. It also did stuff that was just annoying, like when you'd be in a room, it'd pop out of a vent and start hunting you, then disappear only to pop out of the exact same vent SECONDS LATER when you tried to move.

Still very good, and much better than I had any expectations of it being though.

Reminds me of the (in my opinion very good) pacing of Doom 3 BFG edition which helps to alleviate some of the weaknesses of the original game. The spooky stuff is still mostly in the beginning and middle of the game (largely as new demons are being introduced) but once you get to Hell for the first time it shifts to classic "sprint around circlestrafe use your wide variety of weapons to mow down legions" classic Doom action.

On the other hand, if you're a gigantic predator and you know you're prey is in an isolated area with one exit are you really going to sniff around for 5 seconds then run away? The people on the Nostromo had literally no weapons except makeshift flamethrowers. The alien could have just bum rushed them and called it a day but of course that would be boring for the audience.

I wonder about ideas for a single-enemy mechanic and how you'd make the thing threatening while giving you plausible down periods. I thought that the best way is to give the monster some kind of period of hibernation. Or maybe like a snake it needs considerable time to digest its food. One of the biggest missed opportunities in Alien was putting more emphasis on the other survivors. It'd be a great morality moment in a monster game if you could intentionally lure the monster to survivors.

Maybe it doesn't work with the alien but I'd give the monster objectives to doesn't involve you, maybe it needs to complete a ritual or building a next and converting others and stuff like that, give it a life outside of the player, otherwise you start to wonder what it did before you arrived, once you do something to hurt it, then it can start hunting for you especially instead of just when opportunity presents itself.
