I've seen that movie, like within this decade, and I didn't associate it at all. And I was born in 1983 so I ain't even too young for it, what the hell. The TV is way more iconic and with a modern television it could even dwarf the girl and look more scary with the same concept, wtf.

I'd argue that the mindset behind the clown poster was less catering and wink-winking to fans of the original film, and more about trying to pander to a modern audience by shoving anything that looks vaguely like popular modern horror films like Annabelle and Billy from the Saw films. SCARY CLOWN DOLL GETS COVERAGE. AND MAKE IT SCARIER LOOKING!

I'm the only loser in this thread that got really scared to that clown in the original movie and to this day hates clown dolls? (not real human clowns, those are cool dudes. And to my defense I was a little kid and my parents loved to watch horror movies with me around  ). Still, that poster sucks.
