fong posted:think up other ways to waste their time then. Ask for confirmation of membership from every voting member before each vote because you're worried people are crossing over They spent about twenty minutes at the start confirming people were valid members. Then everyone who wasn't one got moved to the far side of the room and got told not to make any noise at all. Like "guys can you keep it down even though you're just ordering drinks from the bar that's directly in front of you because the physical making of the drinks is too loud". If the members moved out of their side of the room they would have apparently had to recount quorum all over again. I don't miss this stuff at all.

puchu posted:Every political party charges to become a member I think A party needs 500 financial members who have paid a minimum of $1 each to be registered with the Electoral Commission. So yea, financial membership of a party generally means you count towards meeting that threshold. UF fell into this trap a while ago because presumably most of their members were dead.

There's actually no minimum amount that has to paid to be considered a financial member and there's no requirement for proof of the financial contribution other than the membership form so in practice you just need 500 people willing to sign the form with a nominal amount on it and someone to pay the $500 registration fee.

I liked the bit where some person said that they were concerned that someone could just sign up for membership and be nominated for a national executive position rather than the people who put in a shitload of hours in to the organisation. It all sounds reasonable until you realise that John Key was parachuted in to Helensville after having done sweet gently caress all for the Nats.

If that's the case it's even funnier that UF got caught a couple of years ago. I think my favourite bit was where they said something was at the absolute discretion of the branch exec. The chair instead put it to a vote, didn't count the vote, explained what the vote meant afterwards instead of before and then made their own call anyway.

Butt Wizard posted:ahahaha seriously? If that's the case it's even funnier that UF got caught a couple of years ago. Ya I was on a party list in the 2008 election and never paid a cent, though my membership form said I did. I think in UF's case they actually dropped below 500 members. Also re: parachuting in MPs, Labour has the opposite problem. Apart from a handful all of their politicians have made a career of it, so they hang on way past their time.
