Outside of "CPS is trying to take away my kids" I can't think of a single E/N that had a positive outcome come about. Every single thread is either someone who does not comprehend how normal human relationships work or someone so far into the depths of batshit crazy that people are sure its fake until it turns out to be true. Plus, there's always goons who married and then get into hilarious lovely situations like that guy from BFC who's wife coerced him into buying a house they couldn't afford then tricked him into getting her pregnant and his budget proposals were hilariously hosed up with like $2k a month for luxuries and him barely paying the bills.

11/2/2011 11:22am - Meet at my moms at 1:30
11/2/2011 12:31pm - Yes

Now I'm retracing the timeline in my head and this is not good.

In early December, she was late on her period, to which I immediately replied "wtf? we didn't even have sex since your last period!" but I wasn't 100% sure, and she acted incredibly offended, and she convinced me we did have sex late in November around Thanksgiving, even though I didn't remember it well.

Then last month I found out she actually miscarried in December, so she WAS pregnant. She had visited her doctor in December and told me afterwards that the doctor was "pretty sure she hadn't miscarried" or something to that effect, which sounds stupid now. Surely they would have known that one way or the other.

So if my initial thought was correct that we did not have sex between 11/15-12/15 and she was pregnant, well then poo poo.

These conspiracy theories are driving me nuts right now but now I'm starting to think there is some truth to this.

Look I know that Bioshock meant a lot to you when you first played it at 13 but you need to have some perspective here. Much like Halo and Quake and Goldeneye and Half-Life and Doom, Bioshock is depressingly adolescent. It really did streamline everything it could from System Shock 2. The only real design coup it made was that for the first time developers decided to fuse the nerd poo poo of an underwater and vaguely steampunk aesthetic with some legitimate artistic stylings like art deco, and the graphical capability of the video game systems it ran on could finally support such an aesthetic without looking like poo poo. Couple that with a surface level commentary on Ayn Rand and a nice twist about player agency and it's no wonder that it blew the minds of teenagers everywhere. But it's not that great a game in the end. It's a bog-standard content muncher that looks and feels a lot prettier than the Gen-X washout aesthetics gamers had been used to for 15 years. It's not some snobby opinion to recognize this. I do and I still like Bioshock a really great deal and recognize its importance in gaming history, but if you like it and aren't willing to do a Google 101 search on its influences and history and realize its place then that's on you, not mean-hearted video gamers.

It got hilarious when, as a defense against getting a divorce zaurg turned into a smug rear end in a top hat about "oh yeah, divorce, totally a good idea, not like that wouldn't mess up my daughter a ton. great idea assholes"

quote:

Easier to agree than tell her no? With this one, both are very hard. Both suck at this point. Upbeat - no. I was upbeat about finances a short while ago when the spreadsheet said I could be debt free in less than 5 years and all these possibilities started roaming around in my head about options we could take... pay off part of debt... then save... pay off all debt... save like mad... buy a house for cash in less than 10 years, etc. All options that sounded amazing if it wasn't for wife hating where we live.

quote:

Quite stressful and the wife is not taking my decision as well as I'd hoped. Doesn't sound like our relationship will survive this and the threat made of her moving out of state with my daughter has me a little freaked out - but I honestly think that was just her expressing frustration and anger and would not do something like that.

quote:

Now I have to divorce my wife. Daughter is 2 years old and will no longer live with her daddy and mommy. But hey my net worth will be better. Oh wait, no it won't.

quote:

Hahaha oh man I forgot about that one, that was my sister's wedding. We stayed in the same hotel room. We had our daughter stay with grandma in a different room so we could have a room to ourselves. But then we rented hotel porn and didn't have any sex.

quote:

Had the most awesome sex last night. Seriously probably the best in the past 2 years. Didn't even use any of the porn, sex toys, or lube. Stuck to the plan of handling getting daughter to bed, set up some candles, poured her some chilled wine, and I am so surprised about how smoothly it went. Wasn't weird or awkward or anything like I had been thinking it might be after a 5 month hiatus. I think some renewed confidence helped me a lot.

Zaurg's story is the Greatest Story. It is better than any store ever told, except maybe the Bible, and Die Hard. Fleeing that marriage was 100%, completely, totally, without a doubt, in all ways the correct thing to do, and it had nothing to do with a "glorious goon bachelor lifestyle."

I wish there was some follow-up to Zaurg's saga. I want closure, like the time that selfish twat decided to get an aggressive, specialized-breed dog to eat her infant child, and she treated everyone who told her not to as if they were drooling morons with too many chromosomes. Then, someone dug up her posts on another forum: "Help! My aggressive, specialized-breed dog keeps trying to eat my infant child." That was great.

I am honestly a little surprised someone didn't track Zaurg down and gently caress up his life (more). The internet is the worst about that poo poo. Every time someone brings up Zaurg, I expect it to either be that, or that some Finnish performance artist has finally stepped forward to take credit.

Edit: I was probably past thirty when I first played Bioshock, and I loved it.

This was the old post that made Mean Bean Machine got so mad he got probated, by the way.

Jenny Angel posted:

It's also explicitly a D&D campaign, as confirmed by a Justin Lin interview posted some pages ago. The order in which I saw the movies was 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and going from 5 to 1 I was floored by how low-key everything was. But it's about escalation. Dom Toretto in Furious 6 is not the same person as Dom Toretto in TF&TF because he's leveled up from like 5 to 20-something. And there are things that are necessary to the process of leveling that far. There's the continuing growth and harmony of the adventuring party/family, and the acquisition and use of magic items/cars. Cars are not just a thing you drive fast in this series (Though it's kinda hilarious how there's the additional parallel of broadening scope of items. In TF&TF, the cars are super important but they don't really do much. They drive exclusively in straight lines, often badly, because these are just +2 Cars compared to the +5 Vorpal Holy Avenger Cars we get later).

Cars are a lifeblood and a part of the character, and as someone astutely noted earlier in this thread, Letty starts to remember "who she is" when she gets behind the wheel against Dom. When you're describing your epic-level character, the artifact-level items he's attained are part of that identity. This is the correct way to play D&D, Lin claims, as opposed to Shaw's crew who are again explicitly referred to by Rome in "evil mirror party" terms. These guys are powergamers. They drive ridiculously minmaxed armored F1 cars, they've looked through a hundred splatbooks to find a little car-disabling artifact that's totally gonna be broken in this next encounter, and they've sorta forgotten to give their characters personality. Shaw just cares about the result, the winning/losing binary, and if one of the characters in his party dies it's because that character wasn't optimized enough. So whatever, roll a new one.

And then it's still confusing somehow when Epic Level Dom Toretto does a superman jump to save Letty and they land on a car which breaks their fall. "How did you know there's be a car to break our fall?" is a line that's ridiculous on purpose and ideally jolts the audience into realizing "Wait, it's probably not actually literal cars that are being talked about here". I'm pretty sure cars are not actually soft and do not actually break falls. But that doesn't matter because it's a (not-particularly-subtle, this movie is not particularly subtle) set of metaphors. You take a big ridiculous risk, as big and ridiculous as you can, to save your fellow party member, and it pays off because of the life-saving force of epic level items. The DM (Lin) is not a neckbearded gently caress, so his priorities are straight. He rejects Shaw's code (brutal, gamist, us-versus-them minmaxing) and accepts Dom's (escalation predicated on doing cooler and cooler things with your friends that you're getting closer and closer to as you play).

I think it's fairly unlikely that we're gonna get a better D&D movie than Furious 6 for a long while. I saw the film a couple week ago and it's still a little baffling just how much Lin "gets" it.
