I am going to be redoing my deck. I pulled up some boards to take a look at what was underneath as the sides are closed up.

2 x 8 joists spanning 3' too far for a 40/10 snow load? Check, but whatever, okay.
2 x 8 ledger not flashed correctly? Check.
4 x 4 footing span too large for the joist span? Check, but hold on a second. Where.. where's the beam carrying the joists?

There's no loving beam carrying the joists?! 3 of the 10 joists are resting on the 4 x 4s directly?

It's SUPPOSED to be flame retardant but it's dubious how effective it really is, considering how the tents are usually partitioned up with plywood. What's more fun is trying to tell the base fire department how to FIND YOU on base before the inferno points it out. Had to do this on Camp Dwyer, when the building next to mine had the smoke alarms blaring and smelled of hickory while I was alone on night shift. It was an unauthorized cookout that I couldn't see because it was hidden in between some sheds in their little fenced off area.

For added pucker factor, here's a bonus shot of how a room is built in those tents.

Well, first off, there may or may not be an actual hole for that fan to suck air out of. Also, in my house, we usually put the faceplate of the fan on the people side of the room. It looks purtier that way.

Straight out of the box, those tents burn down in 5 minutes and that doesn't even cover the added plywood and bedding.

Oh gently caress you're giving me flashbacks.

I spent 3-4 months living on FOB Dragon, which is essentially a multilevel shanty town built into the skeleton of a partially-completed powerplant which the...I think it was a Russian company, but anyway they wisely loving split as soon as the US invaded.

That loving place, man. I have no idea what any of that poo poo would have looked like if it was finished, but there was a 5-7 story structure of a pretty respectable footprint, concrete flooring placed but no walls. Naturally it was completely loving honeycombed with rickety plywood structures, powered by haphazardly-interconnected and -hung extension cords over the course of a couple of years by resident soldiers. Apparently the unit we replaced had actually done a semi-thorough retrofit on the whole goddamn thing in order to run a bunch of wireless nodes; no connectivity to the outside world, but you could share porn or run network multiplayer games over it.

Oh, and the best part: half of it was whatever the standard voltage is in America (110, right?) and the other half was 240v. Both systems ran off of midrange-capacity diesel electric generators, but someone swapping out a couple of extension cords three floors below (or above) you could result in which power strips in your shanty were 110 and which were 240 swapping.

Then there's that one motherfucker in my platoon who is loving incapable of understanding that, because we're off in another shanty nearest the 240v generators, we only have one loving extension cord that's 110, it never changes for loving First Platoon just for Second and Third and the other companies. That guy wound up having to have three different Xbox 360 power sources shipped in because he kept frying everybody's poo poo.

e: VVV yeah, I was mildly flabbergasted at that myself when he ruined the first one. What in the gently caress is going on in that brick that there's no room for that capability?

We have a correct answer!

Seriously though, this landlord is a tool. He sounds like the nicest guy on the phone, but is completely incapable of getting things done. Speaking of swapping out ceiling tiles, this location had an 8 foot ladder in the back that was tall enough to get up into the drop ceiling. When his stooges were swapping out tiles and forgetting/refusing to cut holes for the exhaust fans, they borrowed our ladder then took it with them when they left. So we told the landlord and he replaced the ladder with a new one... a 6 foot ladder. So we called him back. It only took our GM, owner and me calling him a total of 5 times to get him to replace what was stolen.

Pretty close; there was an issue with the install (there WAS a formica top previously) where the sink wasn't built to code, so they decided to rip everything out and since they're "upgrading" the breakroom anyway, they're waiting for a granite slab.

STAB-LOK :argh:

So, I had to look it up, because I was unaware of the STAB-LOK brand. From the 2nd article (the 1st being warnings about overloads NOT tripping breakers and fire hazard) of googling 'stab lok problems'.

quote:

So why don't I recommend having an electrician evaluate the panel? There's no point.

The gist was don't bother with testing, if you see the brand STAB-LOK anywhere just have it replaced outright.

It seems to be a common sentiment in Asia, from what I've heard.
