SOEs are different from non-SOEs p. much in name only. When making a profit is the prime consideration you're going to get regional Air NZ flights cut, educational and alternative channels canned, mail delivery days reduced, etc. Back Benches and Media7/Media3/Media Take were quality content on TVNZ 7, and C4 was better than Edge TV Ghostlight posted:"reflects Māori perspectives" (no definition); Police Ten 7 is counted as this iirc

Okay folks, I've been called a human being on WhaleOil and a fascist on No Right Turn so I think I am probably in the middle. As a Centrist, a very unwelcome breed in NZ, I appeal to all of you! This MUST BE STOPPED: http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/sport/271026/australians-not-interested-in-fifa-world-cup-bid Never mind our differences, let's start today with a campaign to stop this from even being possible!

It's not possible though. It's just a matter of how much hot air and actual money Key spends pretending it is.

Yea, this sounds like a great idea. Never mind we can't manage the stadiums we currently have in Auckland, let's spend a whole bunch more on upgrading them for the most corrupt tournament on Earth.

Slavvy posted:V8 supercar race? gently caress THAT poo poo THINK OF THE TRAFFIC The V8 Supercar race downtown actually had some sort of business case done for it, from memory, and it wasn't half bad. There was just the small matter of shutting down an essential transport corridor in the middle of the CBD. It also had an added bonus of not having to bribe a bunch of people just to get your bid taken seriously, let alone the amount that you'd need to win hosting rights.

OK, So we seem to be in agreement. What do you all think might be the best way to BANISH this very thought from the minds of the MPs who thought it was a good idea in the first place? I am an old man and quite lame, so my first thought was a letter-writing campaign to all of our respective electorate MPs. Other ideas?

OK it looks like when I was working everyone learnt what the ratings system is like but basically it's set top boxes that track what you watch (you log in with a special remote). Match the census data, move people in and out to account for population changes, multiply that fucker out.

"Snedden said any bid process had to be started at least 10 years out, and that meant going for the 2026 or even the 2030 tournament." Well, the fact that the 2022 tournament has already been awarded to Qatar (because they paid the biggest bribes) might also have something to do with going for 2026. Not that we should and anyone suggesting this needs their loving head checked.

Slavvy posted:The problem with that is that we live in a capitalist society where individuals feel the benefits of having more money instantly whereas the benefits of ~~doing social good~~ are ephemeral at best. I don't know why people keep trying to tell me how it currently is. I know how it is. I don't like how it is. I am not saying that right now tv executives are saying that they would never cut news because its the public good, I am saying that right now tv executives are saying they would cut the news if it made more money. Also, I am pointing out that that sort of behaviour is anti social and immoral. Also, people are not wired to think that personal well-being is more important than vague notions of social good? That is quite a ludicrous claim you've made there, one I don't think you can reasonably back up. klen dool fucked around with this message at 12:01 on Apr 13, 2015 |

Civilisation exists because people worked out that working together improves everyone's lot; everyone benefits in ways that they wouldn't be able to by their own labour alone. It's ultimately a self-centered structure. When given an ultimatum between direct harm to yourself vs intangible benefit to society, you choose yourself and this is totally normal and natural. Human nature, you might say. I'm not even sure why you're disputing this?

I don't think a single year has gone past without me hearing how difficult it is to get weed "these days" from an acquaintance in Auckland for like the last decade or more. The Auckland City Mission seems to have plenty, so it can't be that bad.
