Hell, I'm sure curried chicken would be delicious over some fried cubed potatoes - I'll give that a shot next time You've never had aloo curry? It's so good. Also, Japanese-style curry has potatoes (and carrots), and goes very nicely with katsu chicken. OctoberBlues posted:Thanks for this, I'd never heard of that site - this is good listening. AlbieQuirky wasn't kidding about that podcast. It's a really good takedown of the book. Far better than I could do. It's such a lovely, bananas book that I wouldn't even know where to start without just copy/pasting the entire thing. It's pretty much "...that kid... is INHUMAN" for 300,000 words. The richest, most loved person in the world is a video game designer. At the end, the kid wins, inherits 200 billion virtual dollars and is granted admin rights to the MMO, which he immediately uses to smite all the bullies and win the girl that had friendzoned him earlier. He wins after proving himself as master of all that is 80s by getting a high score in Tempest, playing an old Atari game, and re-enacting scenes from Month Python and the Holy Grail. The NYT gave this book a favorable review, by the way.

I'll believe when I see it. It'll just be like that Robopocalypse movie that he was supposed to direct. One of the problems with adapting that book is there's no way they'll be able to license all the thousands of IPs tossed off handedly in the book by the dozens.

I don't think baked potatoes were the entire meal, just the part of it that the guy supposedly fixated on as the dish was being passed around or wahtever. They're a side item that I've seen a lot at "we-have-guests meals" - simple, easy to cook a lot of them, and most people like them. Doesn't make that story any less STDH though.

My great grandparents sorta talked the same way as all these stdh stories are written. The weird expressions being overused ("Let me tell you") and something else about it I cant put my finger on. I don't remember them speaking like that when I was younger, but when they got really old and senile they just started sounding more and more like that. Then when my great grandma ended up in a retirement home and I would go to visit her, I'd talk to a bunch of senile old people (real senile, multiple strokes sometimes hallucinating crazy poo poo senile) and they all sounded even more like these stories. So I just assumed the writers are either really old or had a bunch of strokes/limited oxygen supply to their brain.

Some of these protagonists increase in likeability if you pretend they're a 90-something year old war veteran shouting everything in a tone somewhere between sarcastic and not-gonna-take-anybody's poo poo.

I always feel that these seem like the kind of thing faked by the really really nutty and weird neighbours who decide they hate someone and will continue to accuse them of various (usually small) things, from throwing garbage in their garden to moving fences to vandalising their property, you know the people. That awful neighbour with the dogs DID NOT WANT MY CHILD TO BE OUTSIDE PLAYING AND LAUGHING see how awful they are?
