Aside from e-mail I don't use any Google or Apple services so if they're going to refuse to legitimize the platform by writing first-party apps for things like iTunes and Maps it's their loss, not mine. One of the things that's impressed me with Windows Phone is the way they've sidestepped a lack of apps for certain websites by letting you create live tiles for them instead. I don't have a Steam app, but pinning the website gives me the correct logo and live updates on deals, which the iOS app doesn't do (it does notifications for wishlist deals, but not store front deals). Same with DeviantArt. Some sites only give you the logo and others give you nothing, but it's neat when it happens all the same.

From reading this thread, wasn't the 1020 basically sold (*theoretically) on its camera? If it can't take decent pictures under slightly-non-ideal settings what's the point of attaching what was supposed to be a higher-quality camera?

Having the indisputable best phone camera could have been a genuinely compelling feature for normies, but MS and Nokia had to screw it up with a bunch of lag and poorly optimized default settings. At the time, it technically did have the best capability, but you had to spend 30 seconds dicking around with the settings for each shot and saving it as a RAW file to get anything impressive out of it.

That's why I like camera 360 sight on my 925, fast and nice pics if you don't use HDR. My S4 camera with google camera is really fast aswell.

It is great on Android too. The WP version has nice swipe gestures to access all quick settings and takes a few seconds to set up a shot properly.

All I said was that if the 1040 had a legitimately great camera that took perfect photos instantly, it wouldn't have been as much of a niche product. As it stood, it only appealed to photography and WP nerds who didn't mind messing with settings for each photo. quote:edit: nm, this, MS10 and audiophile thread are basically the only threads you post on, you win, oh King of Dweebs owned so hard edit: lol at the literal autist (el groucho) who bought me this: fyi, i was speaking ironically on the something awful comedy forums. Just in case anyone thought I forgot about this thread Lumia 1520 and my brand new Dell XPS 13 It's still kinda crappy (the padding looks weird) but it's getting there. At least the avatars should not be LOL huge anymore. And again, the bigger the device, the more space it will give the image/title text. So it should scale nicely.

LifeSizePotato posted:Pretty interesting article about MS moving away from metro. I can live with pivots and panoramas going away based on the explanation that swiping through 5 screens to get where you want to go isn't usable. But what is really disappointing with the UX on the WP10 build I have on my Lumia 820 is the seeming obsession with cloning iOS with the theming, not navigation. The round profile pics and rounded on/off switches look absolutely terrible and out of place in an OS built around square, flat controls. For all it's other faults, WP8/8.1 is at least visually consistent and looks great. There's very little I like with the WP10 theme at all. They could move away from the pivots and navigation used in Metro while still keeping the look and feel, but sadly it seems to be the norm for MS to implement awesome features only to kill them in the next iteration due to whatever idiotic metrics they use.

Caring what users say is the metric, and I completely agree that they should stop. Consistently always using those disliked releases, ME to Vista to 8x, even before, I know Microsoft's biggest challenge with operating systems is the fickle, dilettante bitches who literally love things they used to diarrhea about the moment Microsoft doesn't budge and keeps a feature around for a second release.

Navigation is the part of iOS I hate the most. Metro cracked that problem with pivots, and now that WP is dead we'll have to go through another whole generation of UX design before someone at Apple reintroduces pivots in iOS 15 and the rest of the world follows along. Then og metro fans will be like today's BeOS crybabies.

cougar cub posted:I have a 1020, what settings should be changed? Depends. Are you happy with how your quick snapshots turn out? In my experience it would depend on the photo - changing ISO, focus, white balance, etc., which is why it was annoying that the iPhone could just get it right no matter what the scenario. It often came down to the JPG processing and color settings, too. The newest Lumia camera app is much improved from what I've seen, being faster and more accurate all around.

Hi. I bought a Windows Phone for $20 to simply be a music player and it sucks at that because trying to copy any music over MTP takes 8 billion years and the music player app keeps getting corrupted and any time I click on a song it takes like 20 minutes to actually play it and also when the song ends there's this awkward "crrHHCCCZT" at full volume. Did Microsoft ever test this piece of poo poo before they released it?

# ? Apr 21, 2015 18:16 |

Oh also there's this dumb UI design where there's small amounts of random buttons on the right side so if I slight the right side of my phone at all when playing music it will just randomly switch to another song because they forgot to disable the random buttons when you cannot even see them.
