Carriers have weird layouts, but you can't go wrong aiming near the stern. Start out shooting HE to light them on fire so they can't launch or land planes. Then shoot AP so that you'll do some real damage.

The Ranger has a citadel in the usual spot, but apart from that I can't remember the details.

Also, if you're a battleship, you're better off shooting your shells at something else. You can't afford to chase a carrier while getting pounded by its torpedoes.

OSad posted:

CV games feel really borked right now. They definitely feel different in the way that if you want to do the cool torp spreads that the good CV players sometimes do to you, you have to get good at manually aiming them with alt and such.

But it's hard to experiment or even try to do things, when in every game I run across a guy that's running nothing but fighters aiming to area-deny you. In my Langley this is a hopeless situation; the ship doesn't seem to have any AA and when the battle is in it's mid stage, it's very simple for the enemy carrier to just launch both his fighter squadrons out, pile them up on top of each other, and park them right on top of my goddamn flight deck.

I then can't take my torpedo planes anywhere, my single squadron of fighters is hopeless against it, and I have no cruisers next to me to help me out (understandable I guess? I think they shouldn't have to turn all the way around just to help me out). I have to land my planes back into my deck just to keep them alive, to which point the guy just brings his planes back to refuel and launch at the perfect time to gently caress with me yet again!

This poo poo has happened every game so far. CV's seem like they might be interesting, but it's hard to stretch your legs and have fun with them like this.

Edit: ↓ I got right away that the whole fighter load CV thing is useless. I'm just sad that the people who run this don't see it as a useless thing, and when they get to lock down some sap like me in his carrier, they'll feel accomplished and justified to do it again.

You need to outsmart your opponent, which is quite frankly not that hard. People in this game are dumb as poo poo. One of the things you can do, is separate your torpedo bombers. They don't HAVE to be on the same side of the map. Most people who play with a 3 fighter squade will keep 2 together on one side, and 1 on the other side. But as soon as they spot torpedo planes, they rush all fighters to it.

What you need to do is use one of your torpedo squadron as a decoy. Engage his fighters with your 1 fighter. Keep in mind, you WILL lose that battle. But the point is not to win it. Its to keep one or more of his fighter squads busy. If you're lucky, your decoy torpedo planes will be able to launch a few torpedoes before being shot down. If not, it really doesn't matter because he's the decoy. try and use your remaining torpedo squad (hopefully on the other side of the map) to do the best drat torpedo run you can.

Also, remember that allied cruisers are your friend (especially in higher tiers) thanks to their AA. Use your decoy torpedo planes to drag his fighters as close as possible to your allied cruisers and engage them there with your 1 fighter squad. You will still lose, but you will definitely make him think twice about following your planes anywhere.

CV really are not that hard. It just takes a bit of planning, being able to outsmart another guy and a little bit of luck.

Also, hang in there... The Langley is the worst carrier and every other carrier you will have is an improvement on the last one. Except maybe the ranger... I liked it, but people seem to bitch about it a lot.

Insert name here posted:

If it helps the Langley really sucks rear end

Also if it makes you feel better fighter load CVs are useless and bad and unhelpful to the team the vast majority of the time. The only times they come out ahead of a regular plane load is if they manage to neuter two enemy carriers by themselves (they never do).

It reminds me of a game I played in my lexington vs 2 Rangers. Both rangers were fighter fit and never even came close to slow me down. I think I had something like 24 torpedo hits in that match. Talk about them being loving useless.

Lexington arbitrarily gets a much better plane distribution (two fighters, two torpedo bombers).

This + the inherent superiority of higher-tier fighters means that one Lexington can equal two normal-spec Rangers while still being a highly dangerous damage-dealer.

3.1 update has almost everything I wanted, but they aren't addressing dive bombers or fighter mechanics. Oh well.

I was skimming through the latest patch info when I read about FF:

quote:

Other Updates

Friendly Fire

A serious problem for many beta testers has been damage inflicted by friendly ships. We have processed plenty of complaints both against clumsy commanders and deliberate griefers, analyzed the statistics, and prepared to launch a system of penalizing friendly fire. It has the following essence: when hitting allies, at first the player has to pay for the damage with silver. Later on, the player who can’t stay on the straight and narrow and continues to aggravate their brothers-in-arms receives the status of teamkiller.

In addition to the pink color of the nickname, marking the rogue, a system of inversely proportional damage is applied to such a player. For example, if a teamkiller captaining a battleship “takes away” half of the combat capability points of a friendly destroyer, the teamkiller immediately loses half of own ship’s combat capability.

For those who don’t come back to their senses after such hints, we have increased inverse damage coefficients, and, ultimately, we will ban them from the game. Having stopped their treasonous activities, the player cleans up the reputation with the passing of time and eventually moves back to the category of normal users. We hope that this system would protect our players from all kinds of villainy and teach those who carelessly launch torpedoes from back of their own team’s formation to be cautious.

New griefing tactic.. Willing putting yourself in the path of friendly torpedoes to see a destroyer or cruiser go down in flames with you.

On another note, The Saipan is being removed and they are putting the independance in its place instead. I don't remember the Saipan much, but I don't think it was a bad carrier, was it? They added the Bogue to fill the spot of the independance.. I have literally never heard of that carrier before and I am too tired to use my google-fu. Does anyone have any info regarding this ship?

It was still 6 fighters to my 2. All they really had to do was assigned 2 fighters to each of my fighters, and use the remaining 2 to go after my torpedo planes. They completely failed at that which was the entire purpose of them being fighter fit.

The Bogue is simply a Langly, expect the Bogue was not a converted cargo ship. This is mostly back in the days of navy field where the bogue was the introduction US carrier. Its another super light carrier, I think one got mistaken by a Japanese fleet as one of the fleet carriers, so they punched it with AP shells :v:

That's a surprisingly competent team kill system. It sounds like you'll have better opportunity to gently caress with pubbies than tanks, without pubbies team killing you more often.

Saipan is good. I think they switched those ships around because Saipan was a (barely) postwar ship using buffaloes. Tiering your carriers based entirely on displacement leads to some things that don't make much sense.

What no the Bogue class are very much escort carriers made from cargo ship hulls. They also pretty much served exclusively in the Atlantic escorting convoys IIRC.

For those of you wondering if this game is any good, it's basically like tanks, but significantly worse in every way. Imagine tanks, but way slower, allowing you to move in one dimension less, with much simpler spotting mechanics (you can't hide), and with terrible balance issues. Oh, and you know how 1-2% of your tank games end in annoying draws right? Wargaming realized their mistake and fixed it in boats... by multiplying the amount of draws tenfold. So games last 20 minutes, with the last 3-4 minutes being used at driving straight forward with no hope of reaching the enemy or capping them out. Currently going strong at 15% draws. its really cool and exciting.

Prav

My favorite detail with the draw rates is that last patch reduced the rate that you capped and got points from domination points.

You'd think that the designers would consider players getting >10% draw rates on a 20 min timer to be something very very concerning but apparently getting a victory was actually too easy.

Do you have a BB captain with Advanced Firing Training? If yes, put him on it, put the Secondary Battery Mod 2 on it and enjoy the fact that you have the most :black101: battleship in the game right now. You have the heaviest and longest-ranged secondary battery in the game. 7km is the point at which destroyers and cruisers start to hate life around you. You are relatively maneuverable thanks to a fast rudder shift and no BB can dodge like you can. You have good armor. Your guns are inaccurate and not all that good at long range. Just angle yourself so that you can keep shooting with all guns, and move closer to the enemy nose-first to present the smallest target possible while your guns reload.

Dodge torpedoes as they come and keep closing. Destroyers will hate you like the plague because your secondaries rip them to pieces. Cruisers will run away or die. Kongo will probably not run and die. Fuso can hurt you, but she can't run and will die once you get in close. Amagi can hurt you, but you can hurt her worse because she has lovely battlecruiser armor.

Players on the main forums wanted lower cap rates, got lower cap rates.

I feel the issue isn't so much the speed of capping so much as the repulsion field that seems to surround every objective point in WoWS (judging by player behavior).
