Differences exist, but I think everybody wants to gently caress the Republicans hard, first and foremost. I agree with this. Not everyone is satisfied with Hillary but after nearly 8 years of seeing how the Republicans operate, Democrats seem to understand the most important thing is not allowing Jeb Bush or Scott Walker to become Prez. That's why Hillary is polling close to 70%, and an Obama figure hasn't emerged.

Sorry to go back like 10 pages for this, I don't regularly read the thread, but:Solid Poopsnake posted:I don't understand what "anti-genetics credibility" means in this context. Or any context. It's actually straightforward, there's a relatively recent religious conservative talking point that homosexuality has been definitively proven to be non-genetic. It's a whole thing. From Fischer's own article: quote:As Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council points out, rigorous studies of identical twins have now made it impossible to argue seriously for the theory of genetic determination. If homosexuality were fixed at birth, as the misguided thinking of homosexual activists goes, then if one twin is homosexual, the other should be as well. The "concordance rate" should be 100 percent. http://www.onenewsnow.com/perspectives/bryan-fischer/2014/06/17/the-latest-in-scientific-research-there-is-no-gay-gene http://cowgernation.com/2015/01/06/identical-twin-studies-show-that-gays-are-not-born-gay/ http://muslimvillage.com/2015/03/28/76778/identical-twin-studies-show-homosexuality-not-genetic/ (not Christian but I thought it was kind of funny that this had resonance in other religious circles as well.) What always pisses me off is how more people don't highlight the logical leap that these idiots make from saying that homosexuality isn't genetic to saying that it's a choice. Even if homosexuality were 100% caused by environmental factors and 0% by genetics (which is clearly not the case as shown by numerous studies) that would still in no way imply that sexuality were a "choice." I do wish liberals would stop using the phrase "born this way" because it makes it way too easy for conservatives to muddy the waters. "Born this way" is technically false but in practice indistinguishable from reality. It doesn't matter how much of sexuality is determined by genetics and how much is determined by environmental factors because the only thing that matters is that it's completely out of our control and basically set in place at a young age, focusing endlessly on the genetic vs environmental thing is exactly what conservatives want to do because it distracts from the fact that the "choice" argument is a red herring.

Bobby Jindal wrote an Op Ed http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/04/23/opinion/bobby-jindal-im-holding-firm-against-gay-marriage.html?_r=0&referrer= quote:As the fight for religious liberty moves to Louisiana, I have a clear message for any corporation that contemplates bullying our state: Save your breath. In 2010, Louisiana adopted a Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which prohibits government from unduly burdening a person’s exercise of religion. However, given the changing positions of politicians, judges and the public in favor of same-sex marriage, along with the potential for discrimination against Christian individuals and businesses that comes with these shifts, I plan in this legislative session to fight for passage of the Marriage and Conscience Act.

This is how I feel about when liberals say that birth control can be used for "legitimate" medical reasons. I don't care if someone is taking the pill to combat acne or because she wants to set a new record for multiple parters in one night. It's none of anyone's business why, easy access to birth control is a massive positive for society, and arguing that certain uses are more worthy than others just allows conservatives to roll back rights for people that aren't using that way as a compromise. It's the same with gay rights. Who cares if it's genetic or environmental, their rights should be protected and trying to compromise with conservatives is a losing proposition since they will always move the goalposts backwards.

Then you have to give a speech in some dinky room with no audience except a sound guy and a camera man. The only way anyone is going to remember you even gave a speech in a week is if you doing something that can be turned into a humorous gif like Rubio.

I think it's really interesting how much the Obama elections turned race into a crowbar that finally pried racist Democrats away from the Democratic party. Now the question is: can they ever be turned back into Democrats? I can't imagine that they will. Under our working assumption that Hillaryis45, there's no way they'll be able to go back to the attitudes they held 20 years ago, when it was Bill running. It's not even Hillary herself, but the Obama one-drop rule that killed Christie, and which Hillary is now irrevocably tied to. Putting this together with the earlier commentary about how the liberal half of the Democrats under Kennedy raised Obama up specifically to kick Hillary's rear end, it's almost satisfying to see how consistent the Clinton "Third-Way" business is. There's not much to be gained by shifting right any more, so now that we're playing a purely partisan game, there's more to be gained by pandering to liberals. Whatever it takes to get elected, right? Maybe Hillary will dazzle all of us here in D&D with some fresh liberal-sounding bait, and we'll all bite the hook again.
