Cliff Racer posted:Stats for summits are useless since sherpas do a lot more than just summitting. Going at a per year rate is much better. I think its great that you don't think I read these threads since I have for a few months now. I like to mock the idiots but its not exploitative or, if it is, its Nepal exploiting them with expensive climbing permits that probably are not re-invested in local communities. OK sorry I get all the shitposters confused with each other. Are we still trying to draw an equivalence between someone doing a useful and necessary job for a reasonable standard of pay in America, which carries some risk, vs. people doing an unnecessary and pointless job for wealthy Westerners, in an impoverished country, which carries an insane risk? The deaths/year charts are available and have been posted in this thread. They're too high. Way too high, for what amounts to the staff at a wealthy tourist resort location.

Does anybody know what the highest camp reached so far was? I don't know if there have been any summit pushes or not yet, because I have no idea of time scales when it involves climbing mountains. I know camp 4 is in the death zone, but could they hole up in camp 3 until they could figure out a non-icefall route down?

I know camp 4 is in the death zone, but could they hole up in camp 3 until they could figure out a non-icefall route down? Pretty sure most teams are no higher than Camp 1 or Camp 2. There's not really much definitive information out yet regarding the damage at the camps. Those stuck above the Icefall would probably be best off trying to make do where they are rather than ascending further--the higher they go, the less likely they are to be able to get a helicopter rescue. It's possible that routes other than the Icefall have been damaged as well, also making further ascent pretty risky at this point.

Also, lots of reports that there's an expected aftershock that will rival or dwarf the first 7.8 earthquake. Nepali TV is warning it could be as high as 9.0+ on the Richter scale, so Nepal and Everest aren't out of the woods yet. e: Ah, better reign that back. quote:Update 14:28 UTC : The usual CRIMINAL rumors are already circulating. DO NOT BELIEVE them. Aftershocks can be expected but nobody can predict how strong they will be and when they will strike. Strong aftershocks can go on for days and even weeks or months. Every region in the world has different aftershock patterns. We reacted strongly against this tweet (we have to do it all the time! and all over the world)
