So how is the new TVP working out for everyone? I'm still on holiday. I broke my ribs on a boat in Laos and crave the safety of animating at my desk, and a sleek new version of my favourite animation program. Tell me good things.

Yeesh, sorry to hear about that! I shall tell you a tale:

The biggest thing IMO is that LazyBrush is now just built in to TVP, and has been turned into an official part of the workflow. If you animate on one layer and press the "Make Color/Texture Layer" button, it creates an automatic coloring layer which does all kinds of cool poo poo. The amazing thing about this is that it works even if you draw really scribbly and rough. I like to draw with grease pencil kind of texture, but the coloring layer still automatically works. Also, it indexes the color so if you make a character's hat green, and then later want to change it to blue, you can go into the color table for that project and change the "Hat" color to whatever, and it updates wherever that color has been placed in the project. It's not QUITE the same as how Toon Boom does it, but closer.

The interface is way more streamlined and polished now. Lots of stuff has been consolidated and moved to logical menus. There is now a color triangle/wheel like you would have in a proper art app.

There are now a ton of guides/rulers that you can snap to. For example, you can make 1, 2 or 3 point perspective guides and put the vanishing points way off the page. This is SO USEFUL for background painting, which I used to do in Photoshop. You can also make reference image guides, which can be placed like Post It notes all over on top of or outside the canvas, scaled, rotated, opaque or transparent. So if you have a model sheet, you can slap that baby right where you need it, and even move it to the canvas if you want to trace it. You can make as many of these as you want and show/hide them individually.

There's something now called the Flips panel, where you can make lots of different custom flipping/rolling shortcuts. For example, you can have a rolling flip where you flip back and forth between drawings by moving the cursor; or you can have one where you hold down a key and it goes in one direction or another. The nice thing about this is that you can change the boundaries and checkpoints you use, so if you just want to flip keys and skip over inbetweens, you can set it to just flip a particular set of image marks. You can also have it flip between image marks, like if you're doing pose-to-pose and just want to see everything from your last key through the next one. It's hard to describe but it's awesome.

Last but not least there is now this thing called the Library panel, which is sort of like the Symbol palette in Flash. For each project, you can add images and organize them into folders. This could mean reference images and model sheets (to use with the image guides mentioned above), but it can also mean storing mouth shapes or drawing substitutions for reuse. You can put an image of any size in there, like a long pan BG, and then use the images as source files for the Keyframer.

I'm thinking of learning either Toon Boom or TV Paint, but I'm not sure which one. I've been using Flash to animate since I was 11, and it's safe to say I'm over that awful stage of my life now. I'm looking to create more natural 2D FBF stuff, so I'm thinking of TVP, but the interface looks like poo poo, whereas Toon Boom seems to have straight up more features. I'm a fan of Manga Studio's painting engine, but I'm also a heavy Maya rigger/animator/modeller, NukeX person, so I'd be totally comfortable learning TB's node based stuff. Money is of no concern, I just want to see if I can find the best program for me.

The TVP interface got a bit of an overhaul in version 11, so give the trial version a shot. It's very true that Toon Boom has a more robust effects system, and the camera and node-based interface is going to be familiar to anyone with a 3D background. Supposedly Toon Boom also now supports bitmap brushes and layers, so it might be fine for your needs. I find the actual drawing and animation process to be much more natural in TVP, and to me that's the most important thing. I don't mind so much having to go into another program for compositing.

Put the time into TVP. It's worth it. This is my opinion. Thanks for the rundown, neon. You got me all excited!

Also only scrubs don't use a compositing program. Put time into after effects and you will be terrifically glad you did.

TVP is amazingly cool but the price is pretty crazy for me. If I had my own studio I definitely go for it though especially with Lazy Brush added on. Seemed very crazy not to have an automatic paint fill feature especially nowadays.

I like Toon Boom Animate as it's easy, cheap, and since I just do composting/editting in Aftereffects/Premiere I don't really care about all the fancy in Toon Boom Pro.

The new TVP actually looks pretty decent now. Y'all convinced me. It'll be nice to get away from vectors too, though I assume Toon Boom would have handled vectors better than I'm used to with Flash randomly destroying your work if you make one wrong move.

Just try out both. Toon Boom has trials you can download for free too and it was literally built for people that wanted a better animation focused Flash. If you know the workflow of Flash you can almost jump into TB without missing a beat.

They also have nice features like a lazy brush type deal where you can set a character path and it knows how to color it in future cels. They call their trial the Personal Learning Edition.

BTW on my personal project update, Pitch 1 with Frederator studios was very positive and we (my girlfriend and I) will probably be doing pitch 2 in a few weeks. I'm not allowed to post anything here due to signing a release but they threw out comparisons to Oz and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. So even though we have to rework and go a different route for pitch 2, I'm still super excited about the process. It's been fun.

Is this just hand-drawn stuff, tracked to camera movement?

Good 2d animation, thoughtfully composited. They've used blurs well and got away like bandits with reusing a lot of effects.

I know some posters here swear by TVPaint. I was wondering whether it's worth it to go full Professional version or if the Standard version works fine. The comparison chart on their site makes it look like the only significant hit the Standard version takes is lack of blending modes and some FX stuff... How much does this really affect workflow?

Not much. the only thing I really remember being an issue was the lack of "multiply" layers in the standard edition...which I now realise I have never once used. Hm.

Some stuff to consider that is only available in the Pro version

- :supaburn: the frigging automatic color layer thing. :supaburn: For real you don't want to live without CTG layers.
- 64-bit. That can make a HUGE difference with big files.
- Image Library panel, which is where you put all your reference images and model sheets. It's new to v11 and it's great.
- new warp tool that lets you do really really easy cutout animation and puppet-style stuff.

Agh that kinda sucks. I don't know how I'd justify the price since I doubt I'll be making money from it but I'd like professional quality.

I tried out TVPaint, it's pretty cool.

I haven't really done any 2D animation in years, and I still don't really have the time to. When he gets up, I was trying to do a thing where he was being lifted up by his head, but kinda hosed up with the legs and the everything else. Nice little bit of fun though.

Right now I'm working on a cartoon Baman rig that's been killing me for the past year, and there was actually a week period where I was seriously afraid of dying from exhaustion from staying up 7 days without sleep.

What are you using to rig? Is it a toon boom rig or 3D in Maya? Cause there are a ton of modular auto-rigging solutions to make rigging super fast and easy these days.

Man, 7 days without sleep, I have never and hope never to do that.

I'm well aware of them, but this is a very specialist fake 2D thing using mocap and crazy stuff. It was for my Innovations project so yeah.

Don't do it, by the end I was hallucinating nurbs controls on the maya background, I had to concentrate to find the real ones. My wrists felt like they were tightening and I kept having to wear eyepatches because of the strain on them. Sucked balls man. The worse times was when I kept missing my own deadlines for posting the stuff to Uni, after I missed my Royal Mail window I wrote a big soppy facebook post on my uni group page begging for someone to hand in my work on a USB, got a few offers which was great.

bitmap posted:

Too late, already did it, don't want to do it again. If I didn't I would have failed my final year of uni and had to have spent thousands of pounds and a year of my life to redo it. Looking back on my last year, probably would've been better for me.
