CPColin posted:I wrote my resume in LibreOffice and got it formatted all nicely and didn't get a call back. Then I had my girlfriend open it in MS Word and it was formatted like hot garbage. Zom Aur posted:i usually just export all my important docs as pdf. If I intend to have a document read by anyone, it always gets exported to PDF. Abiword and Libreoffice claim to use ODF but they format it differently. I've always wanted to learn how to write documents in LaTeX but the laziness is so profound that I'm going to just specialize in markdown. Countdown until when we need to start exporting documents as html/epub so that mobile readers can view them.

it's news to me that abiword is actively maintained, or used by anyone the last time i saw someone mention abiword, it was an actual printed page, in a linux magazine, back when those existed

Notorious b.s.d. posted:it's news to me that abiword is actively maintained, or used by anyone It gets automatically installed when you run lubuntu. People were updating documentation on older hardware and it was absolutely ruining the layout until someone figured it out. The obvious solution, of course, is to remove abiword and install libreoffice. The true (in 1980s, ivory tower ideals) solution would be to teach kids LaTeX in elementary school or something but

I love latex and use it extensively but it's a bad ecosystem with bad idioms and bad syntax and bad tools and represents the worst of endemic ux problems crippling awesome tech to be clear libreoffice le logos whatever is still worse in every possible way

The best part of my resume-building experience happened when I installed TeXstudio and its package didn't bring in any of the necessary dependencies for it to be able to generate PDF files. Then the UI have useless messages and nothing ever suggested installing the extra packages until I'd Googled it for an hour. Then I didn't write any of that down, so I'll get to go through it all again, next time I reinstall. Oh, also I turned down the job offer.
