If either Nyssa or Laurel were male, and the scenario unfolded identically, there'd be a clear romantic subtext. The diner scene, where Laurel tries to melt the ice queen's heart by introducing her to wacky local foods, is an outright cliche of romantic plotlines. "I came here to teach you how to fight...but now I realize, YOU taught ME how to live again." Aside from the fact they're both ladies, it's extremely conventional. And the CW is actually pretty progressive with respect to LGBT representation. Hell, next week might involve Laurel breaking up Nyssa's wedding. Goddamn gays, always destroying straight marriages.

If he's a reckless vigilante, go around just loving murdering people. If they want him to go "good", make him go full bleeding heart, fighting openly and directly against systemic corruption. It makes gradual, steady character development harder, but maybe that's a sacrifice worth making. I'm perfectly happy to have Oliver develop through a series of wild swings brought on by extreme flashy trauma rather than developing bit by bit brought on by facing the same problem over and over again, and just getting slightly better at dealing with it each time.

The heroes realize Slade hallucinates Shado everywhere and recruit her identical twin, who miraculously did not die of the plague that killed every other human in Hong Kong, to pose as Shado and give him instructions to stop Oliver. Dramatic tension is built up by the fact that she doesn't have Shado's tattoo and they go to increasingly preposterous lengths to conceal that fact from him. Also Felicity falls in love with him and there's lots of cry face over her being unable to tell him because nobody knows what he'll do if he gets over Shado.
