The End posted:So, seeing as Hasbro's going to be doing all the Dominion printings (or at least a bunch of it) from here on out, I decided to take the plunge and grab the last two expansions I needed in their glorious German printed form from my flgs. Adventures had just showed up, so I said gently caress it and grabbed it too. It's a US printing. No miscuts or anything egregious, but I can confirm that in the process of unwrapping and sorting all the cards from Adventures and two German printed expansions, it instantly confirmed for me the difference in card stock. It is true, the US printed cards are thinner (and the box insert is shittier, bizarrely) - you can see it in how they bend and just holding ten cards, you can instantly feel the difference in weight. It's not different enough to make them weird to shuffle, but it's different enough that some people are going to get their nose out of joint. I got in late and bought a Hasbro copy of the base game, and when doing a bad pickup somebody bent a Village card. Now all the cards are sleeved and you don't notice them when playing (we've mixed original print run Seaside with Hasbro base game and it's fine) but the fact a card can be completely bent very easily is worrying. The Reddit comment about blind tests is almost definitely because they were looking for it, but it is a problem. If finding original print runs of the base game or Intrigue are not a possibility, like someone is just shopping online or whatever, then they could always get the Base Cards and post-Intrigue expansions, but then you do have to deal with increased complexity from the go. Also get an early start on sleeves and storage, because the inserts are hilariously garbage.

I'm not an expert, but those Wizard Academy minis looks pretty inoffensive to me. The Kingdom Death ones are hilariously offensive though.

To play a good game with minis: -Buy a model A-10 -Buy A Distant Plain -When ever the Coalition airstrikes just wave the plane over the board and make zooming noises

Re-paint them! Or buy GW-minis as replacements I guess? You could probably make a few new characters by changing cards around and/or mixing skills, and who's to say one couldn't be a skeleton wizard? Edit: Also Tash Kalar with minis would be cool I think

T-Bone posted:I think I'm a sucker for games that have a bunch of mechanics (in this case: drafting, area control, tile placement, and simultaneous action selection) that manage to support each other nicely. You might like Bruxelles 1893. It's a fairly standard worker placement at first glance, but with each worker you're also bidding on bonuses as well as area control on the board for points. With the bonuses you can actually modify what you score points for at the end of the game, or use them for an immediate bonus. On top of this, you can build buildings directly onto the action board which gives you a lesser version of that action when players use it. It also has really cool dynamic markets for selling art and building materials. Surprisingly all these different mechanics blend together amazingly well. If you don't mind a slightly abstracted point salad, it's a very solid game.

Tash Kalar with minis would be pointless, cluttered, and hard to spot patterns. The tokens are infinitely more functional.

Just buy Reaper Bones if you want to paint minis. They are cheap as hell and don't need primer if you wash them.

Thanks I've played Bruxelles 1893, and it was painful even by the admission of the owner. He had previously only played it asynchronously online at Boite a Jeux, and didn't realise how draggy it is to play face to face in real time.

You can always just buy a bunch of minis for mage knight and put enemy discs under them. I'm sure you can find approximate figurines for the actual mage knights.

not that anyone cares, but i'm not interested in kingdom death because the skimpy anime women or whatever, but because it seems like the closest thing to a souls board game out there, thematically if nothing else. if anyone can think of a game that better reflects the feeling of things like the tower of latria, blighttown, or the whole of bloodborne, i'd gladly forget kingdom death exists. the price point is ludicrous, anyway. i have mage knight, and i think it's super fun (another controversial opinion), but the minis are pretty blatantly repurposed mage knight resurrection figures.

Playing a game strictly for the theme is a good way to open yourself to criticism. And the theme of the game you're interested in is "anime titty rape monsters." Gonna reiterate, the theme of the game you're interested in is "anime titty rape monsters."

You only have a few workers and it's over in 5 rounds, I don't see how it could take that long. If it was a learning game with 5 I guess it could take that long but I think ~25 minutes per player is pretty accurate. My experience with it has also been that it's relatively fast playing.

Sodapop stopped making Super Dungeon Explore have "some assembly required" for the expansions, because too many people hate the process. I find mini prep and assembly to be very relaxing, but SDE had some terrible quality plastic with warped out of position notches (The dragon was a pain in the rear end). The only other current board game I can think of with minis to "assemble" is Battles of Westeros. This is the most boring kind of assembly though - fitting slotted minis into ill-fitting bases. If you really want games with fun/challenging miniatures to assemble, you want 28mm skirmish games. There is no getting around it - to feed the need you will wind up collecting miniatures for some tabletop game about magical dudes/dudettes punching each other. Everything else comes preassembled. Others have mentioned Warmachine/Hordes, but Malifaux is pretty much the perfect game for this. The gameplay is unique, the miniatures varied and weird in excellent quality plastic. The size of lists is very small (usually 5-8 miniatures per side) so cost comes from wanting variety, not necessity. That said, it can be hard to find anyone to play it with outside a major metro, just like any niche game.
