Adventures had just showed up, so I said gently caress it and grabbed it too. It's a US printing. No miscuts or anything egregious, but I can confirm that in the process of unwrapping and sorting all the cards from Adventures and two German printed expansions, it instantly confirmed for me the difference in card stock. It is true, the US printed cards are thinner (and the box insert is shittier, bizarrely) - you can see it in how they bend and just holding ten cards, you can instantly feel the difference in weight. It's not different enough to make them weird to shuffle, but it's different enough that some people are going to get their nose out of joint. I got in late and bought a Hasbro copy of the base game, and when doing a bad pickup somebody bent a Village card. Now all the cards are sleeved and you don't notice them when playing (we've mixed original print run Seaside with Hasbro base game and it's fine) but the fact a card can be completely bent very easily is worrying. The Reddit comment about blind tests is almost definitely because they were looking for it, but it is a problem. If finding original print runs of the base game or Intrigue are not a possibility, like someone is just shopping online or whatever, then they could always get the Base Cards and post-Intrigue expansions, but then you do have to deal with increased complexity from the go. Also get an early start on sleeves and storage, because the inserts are hilariously garbage.

Re-paint them! Or buy GW-minis as replacements I guess? You could probably make a few new characters by changing cards around and/or mixing skills, and who's to say one couldn't be a skeleton wizard? Edit: Also Tash Kalar with minis would be cool I think

Thanks I've played Bruxelles 1893, and it was painful even by the admission of the owner. He had previously only played it asynchronously online at Boite a Jeux, and didn't realise how draggy it is to play face to face in real time.

not that anyone cares, but i'm not interested in kingdom death because the skimpy anime women or whatever, but because it seems like the closest thing to a souls board game out there, thematically if nothing else. if anyone can think of a game that better reflects the feeling of things like the tower of latria, blighttown, or the whole of bloodborne, i'd gladly forget kingdom death exists. the price point is ludicrous, anyway. i have mage knight, and i think it's super fun (another controversial opinion), but the minis are pretty blatantly repurposed mage knight resurrection figures.

You only have a few workers and it's over in 5 rounds, I don't see how it could take that long. If it was a learning game with 5 I guess it could take that long but I think ~25 minutes per player is pretty accurate. My experience with it has also been that it's relatively fast playing.

Sodapop stopped making Super Dungeon Explore have "some assembly required" for the expansions, because too many people hate the process. I find mini prep and assembly to be very relaxing, but SDE had some terrible quality plastic with warped out of position notches (The dragon was a pain in the rear end). The only other current board game I can think of with minis to "assemble" is Battles of Westeros. This is the most boring kind of assembly though - fitting slotted minis into ill-fitting bases. If you really want games with fun/challenging miniatures to assemble, you want 28mm skirmish games. There is no getting around it - to feed the need you will wind up collecting miniatures for some tabletop game about magical dudes/dudettes punching each other. Everything else comes preassembled. Others have mentioned Warmachine/Hordes, but Malifaux is pretty much the perfect game for this. The gameplay is unique, the miniatures varied and weird in excellent quality plastic. The size of lists is very small (usually 5-8 miniatures per side) so cost comes from wanting variety, not necessity. That said, it can be hard to find anyone to play it with outside a major metro, just like any niche game.
