Here's a depressing map, countries with the item most searched for in terms of cost, i.e. "how much does X cost".

Switzerland: Rolexes

Britain: Life :smithicide: :britain:

What's your problem with that? Most of the people searching for information on how much something costs in a country won't be those who already live there, because they'll know. So you're getting all depressed about the number of foreigners who want to know how much it costs to live in the UK.

(Now I'm curious as to why Austria appears to have such a thriving sex tourism industry.)

What's that little country near the caspian sea which is very concerned with carpets?

Also why is India trying to buy cows? Would have thought they wouldn't be OK with selling them?

As far as I'm aware it's search results within the country? Nein, you're right, it's general search terms, so foreigners and locals both.

Pirate World: Nearly done!
A bit melodramatic, but I saw this on facebook and it sums up my feelings towards Ed Miliband nicely:

quote:

"Ed seems to think he'd be saving the union by snubbing the SNP. The funny thing is, if the election puts him in the position to do that, he really will have the fate of the union is in his hands.

What Ed clearly doesn't understand is that most people who voted Yes didn't do so for the sake of changing a flag, but because we wanted to change how we are governed. A better voting system, no more House of Lords, removal of nuclear weapons, a constitution cementing the basic reality that power starts with the people and not with the crown.

The No campaign said that we could get all the changes we want within the UK. "Don't leave the UK, lead the UK", they said. I know I'm not the only one who thought the idea of Scotland "leading" the UK was absurd, but if the SNP hold the balance of power then there's actually a chance.

The thing is though, this is the dream scenario. This is the best chance we'll ever get. Plenty of people wanted change and voted No because they believed we could get it within the UK, and if even a Labour government can't deliver that change, even when the SNP hold the balance, those voters will know for a certainty that independence is the only way forward.

It's decision time for the UK, and Ed's the one who has to make the decision. Change, or we're leaving."

I don't completely agree with it, but I reckon it shows just how well the SNP have positioned themselves in the Scottish opinion: that they want to work with Labour on a progressive parliament, and any failures are down to New Labour.

While obviously there are huge numbers of people effectively in slavery all over the world, it's pretty depressing that there is still a country where slavery is completely endemic and accepted, largely on ethnic grounds. I think their government was pressured into passing a token thing to make it illegal but it's not enforced at all.

quote:

Jack Sen, UKIP’s parliamentary candidate for West Lancashire, has claimed that other governments have ignored “the ethnic cleansing” of people of European descent in South Africa.

Sen made the remarks in an interview with the Afrikaner, a publication run by South Africans who are descended from Dutch settlers.

The Afrikaner website said Sen, who describes himself on Twitter as “unapologetically politically incorrect”, is a “bloody genius”.
When asked whether the “white South African” was under attack, Sen said this group had become “an endangered species”.

quote:

Sen also accused left-wingers of having double standards when decideding who was a victim. He also said the West was “controlled by leftists that can trace their roots back to eastern bloc nations”.

When pushed to define what he meant by “eastern bloc people”, he said: "There’s a common thread that binds so-called atheist Marxists like Joe Slovo, Nadine Gordimer, and Ed Milliband. Your audience will have to decide what that is. There are too many commonalities to go over in a 10-minute phone call. Let’s leave that for another day."

Slovo was a member of the African National Congress and a fervent opponent of the apartheid regime in South Africa. He was given a senior position in Nelson Mandela’s government.

Like the Milibands, Slovo – a South African anti-apartheid activist – came from a Jewish background, as did Gordimer, a South African author.
