It reminds me of that whole fwfwfwfw border crossing thing where they list what they do to "illegals" in a bunch of countries and it's always death/life in prison when in reality it would just be deportation, maybe a fine, maybe some jail time. Do a lot of Americans think the rest of the world just executes people for everything? I mean the fact that america still even has the death sentence is seen as pretty crazy/backwards to a lot of the world.

The perception in the US is that black people cannot be successful - even though our President is a black man and there are many successful black people in our society. We have, for whatever reason, basically abdicated the idea of personally driven success or failure in the black community - but not any other community. They were slaves, they owned slaves, they dressed like the English/Americans, they became Christian - they did everything they were asked. Yet they were still asked to do more, and, finally, when they had done EVERYTHING, they were just told it wouldn't work and banished to the reservations. But not before forced marches and lots of deaths.

But, no one says when a Native American doesn't succeed that his ancestors were slaves (they were) or had their lands taken (they did) or had to watch their people diminish to a tenth of their population due to disease and hardship.

In fact...pretty much no one even notices. Usually there's some quip about casinos.

Black people, today, in America, have the tools to succeed as well as anyone else in their class brackets. A lower middle-class black woman, for example, has the best tools to get out of the lower middle-class than a white, Asian, or Native American counterpart.

So there is a culture and mindset thing of the man keeping them down. Right now, the policeman is the big one. A mindset not shared by other groups for whatever reason.

It's not a matter of "waking up one day". It's more a matter of a society that insists that's the way it is. That they can't succeed, and that it's not their fault...but they just can't.

That's so insulting and deHumanizing and degrading and just...RACIST.

And yet, it persists.

And it's a horrible, horrible thing that it does.
