Yeah a fried of mine just posted a macro of a US flag with the words "You don't burn it, you don't walk on it, you don't let it touch the ground!" and I responded with a quote from the US Flag Code that explicitly calls for flags to be burned when taken out of service. As a side note, the image had an eagle on it but it was very clearly a golden eagle and not a bald one.

Neighborhood residents, the Toledo chapter of the International Socialist Organization, local anarchist organizations, and the radical Anti-Racist Action groups from other cities coordinated in planning a massive protest aimed at forcing the NSM rally to be cancelled.[3] The protesters directed aggression against the police, who responded by arresting dozens. This set off a four hour conflict between over 500 protesters and the Toledo police force. Police cancelled the NSM march as the situation between police and the crowd escalated. Members of the NSM and their supporters were told to leave town with a police escort.[4]

Is there actually a single county that has death by firing squad or summary execution by gunshot for stepping on a flag? At worst they might send you to a political prisoner camp in a few countries but certainly not "most" and even then no one's getting shot for it. It reminds me of that whole fwfwfwfw border crossing thing where they list what they do to "illegals" in a bunch of countries and it's always death/life in prison when in reality it would just be deportation, maybe a fine, maybe some jail time. Do a lot of Americans think the rest of the world just executes people for everything? I mean the fact that america still even has the death sentence is seen as pretty crazy/backwards to a lot of the world.

From Facebook comments: "Barack Obama's black power conspiracy, is real. BARKS (Black American Race Klan Supremacy) exists, as well reverse discrimination. Did you ever hear about blacks discriminating against other blacks? They are really nasty. Did you see what almost happened to Baltimore's Mayor for being educated from a good family? Obamita has never been interested in helping black America. If that has been the case (he is claiming), why he didn't start resolving racial divide the first day in office?"

I remember hearing that Turkey had the strictest laws against flag desecration. Fake Edit after some research Nope, Saudi is leading the way! Since their flag has the shahada on it, flag desecration is punishable as blasphemy. Turkey is pretty middle-of-the-road, fine or imprisonment. That seems to be fairly standard in most parts of the world. Maybe I heard about it because they are more likely to enforce it? Either way, there you go.

gradenko_2000 posted:The perception in the US is that black people cannot be successful - even though our President is a black man and there are many successful black people in our society. We have, for whatever reason, basically abdicated the idea of personally driven success or failure in the black community - but not any other community. While there are challenges against Native Americans, for example (they have super high poverty rates in their community) and Hispanics, and even Asians - we don't give these groups a "pass" and say "well, they didn't succeed because of...slavery." This person is unfathomably dumb. Slavery and racialized Atlantic slavery were two very different things. You can't necessarily compare, say, the legacy of slavery in America to the legacy of slavery in more ethnically-homogeneous societies, or to societies where slavery was never racialized, or to societies were slavery was effectively abolished by the high middle ages (so most of Europe, then). The only reasonably apt comparisons would be other countries in the Western Hemisphere. Surprise! Brazil and other countries to the south of us often have very similar legacies of slavery and enduring racism. They also evidently know gently caress all about the livelihoods of most Native Americans. Yes, you would be right to blame land theft, genocide, and cultural annihilation for the current and very real plight faced by Native Americans. By opening the conversation up for comparison between Native Americans and African Americans, they've invited a really good example of enduring impacts of historical injustice that have never been addressed by white America. There is literally a 0% chance that the murderer of a police officer will not suffer the consequences of his actions. There is nothing to riot about.
