Deceitful Penguin posted:I actually thought about how to fix this in a bunch of ways, some of which was to allow tribals to actually generate prestige via events and decisions, rebates to the upgrades as time goes on and how if certain regions get big chunks taken out of them, the rest get an event where they receive a free upgrade, to show how the people fleeing those places or whatever have come to try and help the rest. That's one of the things I played with in my all-tribal mod. I liked the craziness that was an entire world of single province tribes, but I needed to find a way to make it easier for the AI to upgrade them. Eventually I settled on something where they can upgrade for free after 1000AD, but it would probably be better to make regional upgrade events like you are talking about.

Cutting down tribal upgrade time would also let you actually use the glut you sometimes end up with. 3 years to upgrade a single thing that provides such marginal benefits is ehhh. And I swear construction doesn't actually lower the cost/buildtime on the prestige cost ones, which are usually the ones you actually are able to do. Some sorta cheap festival to turn piety into prestige and a tournament equivalent for all levels would be neat. Events having to do with visitors would also be cool; the Sagas often mention how "ring-givers" and people who were hospitable were greatly respected. I don't know enough about steppe or defensive tribals, but some variation of "we had a great fishing haul/ great farm year/ great foalings/ hunt/ time fleecing tourists" for added money & prestige, maybe something small like 25 each, combined with event that cost you one or the other would be neat. You host a visitor and he's rude, so either you beat him and pay the fine for prestige or let him be boorish and lose prestige. And I know there's already events for when certain titles are held by wrong religion/culture just for an announcement, but can you tie things to them? It still always sorta makes me sad that there aren't like, mines, like there were in the old total war games, because the added money boost to W-African pagans would totally change how they operated. Them having lotsa-cash would make it more likely that they could actually upgrade and break out; it would also encourage the AI to actually go down there in a timely manner. They should really just have the 'real' province name show up in the tooltip for the province (if they don't already) and then yeah, go ahead and localize everything into Nahuatl.

I've been playing CK2 lately and I've come to the realisation that the Charlemagne start plays pretty much how I hoped that EU: Rome would play. My biggest gripes with that game is the half-hearted implementation of politics and dynastic prestige. As well as the barbarians. Goddamn the barbarians. The tribes in CK2 Do more or less the same thing but just function so much better. I would really be interested in a Rome 2 based of off CK2 with some tweaks.

Hey Darkrenown/Wiz/Johan/Groogy/podcat, have you guys decided if you're doing another FanFest at Gamescom this year? I'm trying to decide if I want to buy tickets and for how many days and that factors into the decision. Last year's was cool and one of the highlights of my Gamescom. Oh hey, apparently this was stealthily announced. Guess I'm going then. https://www.paradoxplaza.com/paradox-fan-gathering-2015 Drone fucked around with this message at 11:41 on May 6, 2015 |

I think the best part of Vicky 3 will be the music, the current iteration of the game engine lets us have music play more frequently in some situations, or not at all, so we can have socialist anthems after the revolution and imperial marches in absolute monarchies

Thats always the sucky part about playing a EU4/CK2 minor. You end up having to restart a lot when you get randomly crushed and game over'd in one war. At least it's usually in the first hour or so if that's going to happen.

I once spent and embarrassingly long time researching Norse names for places in Britain so I could rename my conquests there as Norse Norway in CK2. For those places I couldn't find anything historical for I tried to find and translate the literal meaning.

I sorta pride myself on not doing that for every single county and duchy, but honestly I feel little better than the weird Byzantophiles who insist it's Basileia Romanion.

I don't know if anyone bothered discussing this article when it came out: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/02/28/subverting-the-nazis-alternative-hearts-of-iron-playstyles/ But for some reason I got excited thinking about Hearts of Iron 4 a few days ago and remembered it. Anyone here ever take an alternate path with Germany in 2 or 3? Edit- just saw the entry on National Focuses for HoI4. I hope there's a way to mod in new national focus trees for other nations Fidel Cuckstro fucked around with this message at 00:56 on May 8, 2015 |

So I'm going to try a game of HoI 3 as Germany, and see if I can go an alternate history route. I modified my leaders so I didn't have to have Hitler or any of his more odious gang looking back at me from the politics screen, so picking through the leaders file and spot checking some of them on wikipedia, I went with: Head of government- Konrad Adenauer Head of State- Theodor Heuss foreign minister -Albert Dufour-Feronce armament minister - Ludwig Erhard minister of security - Gustav Heinemann minister of intelligence- Oskar von Hindenburg chief of staff - Ludwig Beck chief of army - Werner von Fritsch chief of navy - Erich Raeder chief of air - Ernst Udet Adenauer and Huess are probably out of place the most leading Germany in '36, but there aren't a ton of leaders to chose from in the game that aren't Nazis or Fascists in general. The rest seem like either general autocrats or old German military types...so I guess that makes sense as a Conservative/anti-communist coalition that's growing out of the Wiemar? Trying to decide on goals though is difficult. I guess in General, my goal is to re-build/re-establish Germany as a major power and also have a strong anti-Communist stance. The reality of resources also means I need to get a reliable supply of metal, oil and rare metals going fairly early in the game. And finally, I'd like to see if I can keep at least the US out of a war with me. I know that it's possible to get the US to go Axis, but I'd like to just see if I can keep them non-Allies. So to those ends, I'm thinking -Try to get Nationalist China in the Axis instead of Japan. I think the numbers bear out Japan as a more valuable ally (not much less in manpower, more resources and way more leadership and IC), but- and I've never played a faction leader before so maybe I'm wrong- I'm wondering if not bringing them into the Axis avoids the chance of being forced into a war with America due to a Day of Infamy decision? -Also, bring Persia in to the Axis. I think Persia's a popular alternate route for Germany players since it's out of the way but provides a nice source of oil and window into central Asia. Also I'd like to see if I can encourage them to take Iraq, and maybe Saudi Arabia? -In both cases I bet somehow the neutrality/threat mechanics will get in my way. I suspect raising Russia's threat could get Persia to join me? I'm assuming/hoping China might join up because of Japan. -While I'll see if I can still add Austria and Czechoslovakia to Germany without a fight, I suspect I may have messed those decisions up by removing the Nazis from power. I think the Austria one requires the Nazis to be at some popularity/organization level that I can't reach... -Instead of attacking Poland and triggering WW-2, I'm wondering if I can do a limited war with the Netherlands and avoid getting France/UK involved? The Netherlands themselves aren't worth a ton, but taking Indonesia would go a long way to solving my resource problems Assuming I accomplish all that, I'd assume I'll still have to go to war with the Allies at some point. I imagine Italy will trigger something. So maybe instead of taking France I could do a sneak invasion of England? land an invasion force before they know what hit them? I guess I could test the limits of air-supplying an invasion force, since I'm pretty sure I'll be screwed trying to supply them from a port. Also will be interesting to see if/how Russia handles not being given the M-R pact.

There's also those two mods (Democratic Germany and its successor mod, Communist Germany) for Darkest Hour that includes a bunch of reasonably plausible ministers and events for a variety of different Germanys, you could probably download it and peek into the ministers folder for inspiration. And the problem with annexing Austria is that you're likely to run into a similar problem that Hitler nearly faced: namely, Austria's fascist government is endorsed and protected by Mussolini. Unless you go the historical route and buddy-buddy up with Il Duce, you're gonna have issues. Drone fucked around with this message at 06:23 on May 8, 2015 |

Sounds interesting, I'll take a look at them. Yeah I'm trying to decide if I should link up with Italy. I guess if Hitler's not in power, there's nobody in the German government getting all goo-goo over Mussolini, and while they're an easy pick up for the Axis and technically not a drag on the faction the way they kind of were in reality, there is that "well we had to have them last time so let the Axis have them now" mentality...and like I said I suspect they'll start a war with France somehow. On the other, other hand though I guess Italy starting a war with the Allies does give me a reason to fight a war with the Allies. I imagine it's not a ton of fun playing a WW-2 grand strategy game where you avoid starting a World War ever

Will neutral nations still have some kind of government description to let us know in which direction they are drifting, or will they just all be designated flat-out "Neutral"? I mean if Poland is a Neutral nation but is being influence toward the Allies, it would be described as something like "Social Conservative".
