someone that understands this stuff better than me should write a basic explanation of voting in the primaries and how that's the most important thing for his campaign. i believe in texas independents can vote in the democratic primaries but many states have closed ones that might require people to declare/change their party.

florida is a closed primary state, which means you must be a member of that party to vote in the primary. typically you have to be registered for a party for a set amount of time (typically a year) to vote in the primary. so if you want to vote for sanders in the primary you should register as a dem

here are all states and their primary types: http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/primary-types.aspx

if you are unsure you should register dem asap because some states have time requirements.

i know that, i meant how do they count the votes? simple nationwide majority? or is there some electoral system?

In Florida you only to be registered one month before the election to vote, even for party primaries. Usually by the time we get to vote in the Democratic primary the race is pretty much decided though.

Vote whoever you want in the primary, but be sure to vote for Jill Stein in the general. Unless Bernie beats Hillary (that will not be allowed to happen).

it is a confusing stupid system. what you are actually voting for are delegates who then vote for your candidate at the convention. it is an electoral like system where each state has a certain amount of delegates. also some states split their delegates based on the percentage of votes for each candidate. also there is no requirement for your delegates to actually vote for that candidate at the convention.

there are also apparently superdelegates, who are pledged to no candidate and can vote however they want. also the number of delegates each state gets "is based on two main factors: (1) the proportion of votes each state gave to the Democratic candidate in the last three presidential elections, and (2) the number of electoral votes each state has in the United States Electoral College. States who schedule their primary or caucus later in the primary season may also get additional bonus delegates."

the votes in the primary are used to assign a number of delegates who go to the convention and vote for whoever their state supposedly wants to be the candidate. Democrats make the delegates proportional to the way the vote broke down per state.

Here's where it gets evil: superdelegates. A large percentage of the delegate votes (like 1/4 iirc) are just straight-up given to elected office holders and party officials. So right off the bat the establishment gets a big head start.

basically it's insanely retarded but also ingeniously set up to provide an emergency plan in case a real non-establishment person wins the nomination. the delegates could ultimately vote however they want and the superdelegates themselves hold tremendous influence over who is the candidate. They can force a candidate that isn't even close to winning the most votes, which is exactly what would happen if Bernie got the most votes in the primary.

maybe we start a new thread and stick it, with a cleaned up OP with some actual info in addition to shitposts? it'd be good to have something easier for new readers to jump in to that's maybe a little more clear.

it is in theory there to save us from an insane person but it is really there to stop people like bernie. if bernie wins most of the delegates yet the super delegates throw in for clinton it will be a huge poo poo show.

the wiki breaks it down pretty well, but can you imagine any democrats in congress, or governors, or party officials voting for Bernie instead of Hillary? If the race even looks close you can guarantee that all of those votes go to her.

the news media's overall take on Bernie seems like a more reserved version of what people are saying here. i wonder if the perception of Hillary as the sure fire winner will backfire in any way.
