The Guardian’s political editor, Patrick Wintour, confirms that the Labour leader is expected to stand down shortly.

We’ll have all the latest here as it unfolds.

The result couldn't have been realistically better. The English population isn't as stupid as this thread likes to make them out to be, they genuinely want a more stable economy based off real private sector growth, not the easily swallowed idea of more poo poo for free with no cost to it.

Its amazing how much the left disparages the working class (racist, ignorant, easily lead by the papers, CUNTS!!) giving voters no credit for their choices on a legitimate rational basis. The arrogance and callousness of it is one of the reasons why we're looking at an actual Tory majority in a system where it was believed by all pundits that the days of majorities are long gone.

Fair dos. but please hold the party you're wanking over accountable for the deaths of a large number of people due to benefit cuts, both in the past and in the next five years. I am lucky enough to still be able to work despite disability, but since most work I can do is temporary I am still going to get screwed over by benefit cuts as it can take a couple of months to get a new job once a contract runs out (the joys of having a Learning Disability that is pretty much invisible meaning I get the minimum amount of help possible to find new work).

You know, I think back to the last labour leadership election, with brother running against brother, husband against wife and thinking 'this can't be good'. Let's hope labour gets a little less incestuous.

The major working class swing was towards the "immigrants are the cause of all evils" party so I'm not sure you can suggest that they love the conservatives.

I don't know if that's true. I think the problem is deeper - working class politics as a whole have been completely eroded. People are no longer voting on class lines it seems, which really is a regression of the political situation in the UK back to the 20s, or earlier. The growth of people who would previously have voted on class lines voting on a nationalist basis is probably the most visible symptom of that.

To make this a question of whether the left should be in Labour or out of Labour is missing the forest for the trees I think. We're not faced with organisational questions like what party to be in. We need to rebuild the whole concept of working class politics from the ground up.

It's actually pretty interesting that although the Tories have gained less than 1% more of the vote share they've gained 21 seats, while Labour have gained just over 1% more of the vote share and lost 26 seats.

Well all you guys who 24 hours ago who were saying they'd tactically vote for Labour rather than a party that represented their views, that worked out well, eh?

Mostly I am wondering whether Labour would have more seats at this point if the Green voters also voted tactically.

Look, under FPTP, a second viable party for left wingers to vote for (even a third, if you theorize that UKIP is disaffected left wingers) is really really not a good thing. Either Labour needs to die fast (which it won't) or the Greens do. Or the situation is gonna be even worse in five years' time.
