My attitude with Bernie's run is to advocate with the enthusiasm as if he could win, rather than showing your hand from the start. The better results he makes in the primary, the more likely the Democratic Party will see there's a powerful, galvanized constituency worth listening to. If/when he loses, it could be possible that the Dem calculus will decide that in order to retain his supporters for the general, the party will have to adjust its policy or make concessions to help keep them interested in showing up for the general election (and hope that it will get those supporters to vote down ticket Dem than just plugging in Hillary and protest voting for other seats). Really it's about creating the illusion of a threat than anything; I doubt Bernie supporters are going to just let a Republican win. It's possible to acknowledge that he's a long-shot candidate without deriding his supporters as naïve rubes who are going to spoil the general election, since this is a primary and he's not running as a 3rd party candidate that can split the vote when it counts. If you're going to fight, fight with the intent to win. But if you lose, do what you can with what you got.

IXIX posted:Why is it that the UK pollsters seem to be so off compared to the American ones? I don't know if this is the real cause, but American political scientists have spent decades studying polling techniques and voter behavior to the point where we are really, really good at predicting individual voting behavior as well as how to conduct good polls. We've had decades of elections to figure out tricks to get around non-response, selection bias, and so on. Quantitative methods are also huge (maybe dominant by now) in American political science, so there's more large-n studies of behavior rather than theory or philosophy. This helps us understand how to predict broad voting behavior, even with new challenges each election. In the UK, political science has not really focused on voting behavior all that much, and American political science is far more advanced statistically than basically any other country. This is changing rapidly though, so I would expect the UK political scientists just need to learn from a few elections what went wrong and how UK voters tend to misrepresent their views, or how polls aren't accurately canvassing their voters. Maybe they didn't properly screen for likely voters? They also probably underestimated the incumbent advantage and only asked general party preference and not constituency level-preferences, which is how people actually vote.

Concerned Citizen posted:Let's not forget that Hillary raised $200 million for the 2008 primary. The finance sector was a relatively small overall portion of that. And she is a New York-based Senator, so no surprise that the top NY donors were backing her. While I agree that money has a corrupting influence in politics, the idea that she is beholden to these folks because of what is less than 1% of her total fundraising is absurd. Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate (i.e. the casino destroyed the economy) was 20% counting PAC and individual contributions in her 2008 primary bid: https://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/indus.php?cycle=2008&cid=N00000019 FAKE EDIT: Seriously, quote just ignores all those space characters? goddamnit do I really have to take a screenshot

The US polls in 2014 were spectacularly lovely. Remember when Lundergan Grimes was in the MoE on election day? Remember how Warner had a double-digit lead on Gillespie in Virginia? Presidential elections are relatively easy to poll because there are only two candidates and the voters have way more information than they need to make a decision. But the polling industry has been in bad shape for the last several years because response rates have dropped below 10%.
