How about talking to the dad first, getting all of the facts, and then deciding if it warrants getting the police/lawyers involved? The line of credit was just opened, and isn't in default as far as we know. If the dad has other means to pay for the roof then he can pay off the credit line in full and it can be closed. It sounds like OP has talked to his dad and that was one of the options (even if it required raiding his retirement savings for "emergency"). Everyone here is so quick to throw the guy under the bus without knowing the whole story.

Maybe this belongs in the Schadenfreude thread, but my wife works in marketing for a very large company that had a very large breach of customer data. As she is a customer of the company she works for, she just found out someone stole her identity and opened a Capital One card. At this point we know the debt isn't the OP's and as such they have to follow certain procedures. Plus following the Bad With Money thread means we've all seen parents gently caress over their kids' credit. So maybe we're jumping to conclusions, but it's not like this doesn't happen all the time.

My silly sister just paid $4000 to have the transmission rebuilt on her 05 Altima. The car has 210k miles on it, and now it's worth maybe $4500 with a full tank of gas. The shop financed her with 70 days no interest, after which it jumps to 29% retroactively. She is considering a second job delivering pizza again with her raggedy car. Bonus detail: she just posted a photo on her Instagram of "an ounce of shatter." I have no idea what drug prices are, but I'm guessing it was $500 or so. Between that and her rapid acquisition of cheap tattoos and piercings, she is puzzled as to why she can't land a career job.

Oh okay. I'm in WA and my understanding is that we legalized the flower but not concentrates. I didn't want to get into price comparisons since that's a regional thing but yeah, 500 is really low for that much. An ounce of oil would probably last me over a year.

OP is showing up as a cosigner. Anyone legit asking for references to extend a line of credit/ credit card/whatever we're calling it does not ask for signatures and ssns of "references". They ask for CONTACT information. OP was added intentionally. I was out for a walk the other day along the waterfront, where the narrow waterway is between two lakes so there is a lot of boat traffic, and some guy was on his boat's megaphone telling people on shore that "you should really reconsider you life and get a boat". All I could think about was boat equity. Boats are fun and all and I like going out on the water as much as the next guy, but if it flies, floats, or fucks you're better off renting.

So anyway, I had a collections notice for a lease that I wasn't on. The next morning when the apartment's office opened, I went there immediately and tried to find out what happened. Apparently they had correctly removed me from the lease in their electronic system; however, to save effort, they'd just modified the existing lease file instead of creating the new one, so the filename itself still had my name in it. They sent that file to the collections agency but hosed up by giving them my name as well since it was still in the filename. Fortunately, they realized their mistake and were willing to call the collections agency to make a correction, but that was a fun three weeks of honestly telling the collections agency "no, that debt really isn't mine" and providing something like 30 pages of documentation that I wasn't living at the apartment in question and my name really wasn't on the lease.
