How about talking to the dad first, getting all of the facts, and then deciding if it warrants getting the police/lawyers involved? The line of credit was just opened, and isn't in default as far as we know. If the dad has other means to pay for the roof then he can pay off the credit line in full and it can be closed. It sounds like OP has talked to his dad and that was one of the options (even if it required raiding his retirement savings for "emergency"). Everyone here is so quick to throw the guy under the bus without knowing the whole story.

Maybe this belongs in the Schadenfreude thread, but my wife works in marketing for a very large company that had a very large breach of customer data. As she is a customer of the company she works for, she just found out someone stole her identity and opened a Capital One card. Give credit to Capital One, they contacted her about the card before the thief had the opportunity to use it.

The OP has talked with his/her dad and dad seems to not know everything or is holding back info. At this point we know the debt isn't the OP's and as such they have to follow certain procedures.

Plus following the Bad With Money thread means we've all seen parents gently caress over their kids' credit. So maybe we're jumping to conclusions, but it's not like this doesn't happen all the time.

My silly sister just paid $4000 to have the transmission rebuilt on her 05 Altima. The car has 210k miles on it, and now it's worth maybe $4500 with a full tank of gas.
The shop financed her with 70 days no interest, after which it jumps to 29% retroactively.
She is considering a second job delivering pizza again with her raggedy car.

Bonus detail: she just posted a photo on her Instagram of "an ounce of shatter." I have no idea what drug prices are, but I'm guessing it was $500 or so.
Between that and her rapid acquisition of cheap tattoos and piercings, she is puzzled as to why she can't land a career job.

Y'all saying it was a line of credit and dad just got confused, roofers made honest mistake, some data entry monkey flipped info on a form, etc:

You don't get added to a line of credit as a reference.

OP is showing up as a cosigner. Anyone legit asking for references to extend a line of credit/ credit card/whatever we're calling it does not ask for signatures and ssns of "references". They ask for CONTACT information.

OP was added intentionally. Only question is whether that was by roofing scam artists or dad (hint: probably not dad).

My grandfather put 3 trustees (not family) in place of his trusts and at his old age lost somewhat most of his mind. He started receiving sweepstakes in the mail and via fax and they started out small. He would send money via western union, $100 here, $1,000 there. (he would pay a girl at the house a $100 to run his errand sometimes) Eventually the scammers got bolder and asked for more and more money and the sum had added up into the millions (between 3 and 4 million) During the 3 or 4 year period, my dad begged the trustees to stop him, begged the authorities, and ultimately Western Union to stop letting him send the money. Nothing ever worked and my Grandpa is now dead. (he died 2 years ago).
The Trust attorney appointed himself as one of the Trustee's (go figure) and him and the other 2 trustee's made us sign pretty much a 50 page release to release them from any wrong doing, so we cant sue them. <-- or should we try anyways?

[Ontario] I basically live in a typical suburb except the house at the end has a lot of land going far back and they own a horse. So these people are very rich and they like to walk their horse around the suburb. They have no respect for people's property and basically let their horse walk anywhere, on people's lawns, boulevards, driveways etc. The horse also takes horse-sized shits when they walk it and they never clean it up. Since my house is very close to theirs, they always walk their horse by, and the horse frequently takes massive shits on my lawn. My lawn seems to be one of the preferred places for this horse to poo poo. Whenever it starts making GBS threads they just wait around until it finishes and then walk away without cleaning it up. I have put up no trespassing signs and it didn't help. I have confronted them about this several time and they have been very snooty and joked one time that "it makes great fertilizer, you should be grateful for the free gift". I did not find this amusing and it pissed me off a lot.
So recently I dug some small holes on my lawn where the horse usually walks for gardening purposes. The horse got caught in one of the holes and tripped, injuring itself. Now my neighbours are furious, threatening to sue if I do not pay the horse's vet bills. I laughed in their face and said I would counter-sue for vandalizing my property (with all of the horse poo poo) and I would also seek to have them charged for trespassing. They raged and said I would be hearing from their lawyer.
So I'm making this post just to be sure I'm covered right? I'm allowed to dig up my own lawn to garden, and there's no way they can prove I dug the holes to intentionally discourage their horse from walking there. I had the appropriate signs and they were trespassing. So they have no case right? Anything else I need to do to cover myself? Advice and opinions welcome.
edit: a a couple more details. I have planted plants in the holes and watered them and stuff. I'm not sure of the extent of the horse's injuries, it might have broken it's leg though.
On a lighter note, I expect my lawn to remain horseshit free for the forseeable future :)

They've been paying me $40 an hour, and I've been helping them for about a year. They recently called me and offered me stock in the company. Instead of making an hourly rate, my hourly rate would go towards me owning 5% of the company's stock after putting in an additional 750 hours.

I know they want to do this in order to free up more money to do marketing and further get the company off the ground, but it still seems like a questionable decision for me.

I think the chances of the company being bought by a competitor is pretty low but possible, but other than that, I don't know if the company would be making major profits for at least a couple more years.

EDIT: Oh, and they are reserving the right to buy back the shares at the original price one year out. Does that make a difference?

Another possibility could be something like happened to me, though.

I rented an apartment with my sister and her at-the-time boyfriend right after I got out of college. All of our names were on the lease and we split rent/utilities three ways.

Two years later, the lease was up and I decided not to renew; I was making a bit more money and I wanted to move closer to work. So me and my sister's boyfriend went into the office (my sister was in the army and deployed to Iraq at the time, but she still sent him her thirds of the rent/utilities). We renewed the lease under his name only (since I was leaving the apartment and my sister wasn't there to sign), and I moved out.

Five months later, I got a collections notice for back rent and damage to the apartment. Apparently once I moved out and wasn't there to remind him to pay rent, he just stopped paying it. He then abandoned the apartment three months after I'd moved out, when my sister broke up with him (via Skype!) because she basically realized she didn't want to babysit his finances for the rest of her life.

So anyway, I had a collections notice for a lease that I wasn't on. The next morning when the apartment's office opened, I went there immediately and tried to find out what happened.

Apparently they had correctly removed me from the lease in their electronic system; however, to save effort, they'd just modified the existing lease file instead of creating the new one, so the filename itself still had my name in it. They sent that file to the collections agency but hosed up by giving them my name as well since it was still in the filename.

Fortunately, they realized their mistake and were willing to call the collections agency to make a correction, but that was a fun three weeks of honestly telling the collections agency "no, that debt really isn't mine" and providing something like 30 pages of documentation that I wasn't living at the apartment in question and my name really wasn't on the lease.

They did finally rescind the collections notice, and it didn't end up staying on my credit report.

Barratry is actually a mutiny of the officers or master against the orders of the ship's owner. There's no hard and fast rule against intentionally damaging the ship because in some situations, it's what you need to do - especially intentionally beaching to prevent foundering, or jettisoning cargo.

poo poo a ship's master is, in theory, allowed to take out a mortgage against the ship (in a very narrow set of circumstances)

Intentionally wrecking a ship for no good reason usually falls under criminal law of the coastal state these days, under environmental law.
