I was really surprised how much I liked the rental Yaris I had. Sure it's gutless but it was fun to rev the poo poo out of and throw into corners. Skinny high-mpg tires squealing the whole way. Guy at work picked one up last summer and gets good mileage out of it and hasn't had any issues, he's already put on ~75k miles.

At what point does it make more sense to start from scratch and build a tube frame than to cut down an existing car and add on tube sections? I've always wanted to build my own car and have a stack of books on the subject as well as several built up in Solidworks. If I don't get the MG I'm going to be making a stupid track rat and I'm nearing the point where it might be cheaper and easier to start from scratch. I already have a capable welder and access to tubing benders and notchers that I can borrow...

So what do people think the chance is Tesla will hit the numbers they're talking about on the Model III? 200mi range, $35k, charge in 25-30 minutes - https://www.minds.com/blog/view/443508465227272192/tesla039s-model-iii-goes-200-miles-per-charge-and-costs-35000 If they can actually hit that I'm going to be very tempted to pick one up...assuming the car isn't a complete piece of poo poo to hit those number.

My former boss' husband did automobile insurance adjustments, and as much as he loved his XC70, he bought a Yaris for the fuel economy. And surprisingly, it worked pretty well, despite not babying the gas pedal. It also probably helped that he's amazing at negotiating car sales, so I imagine he got a good price. I don't know that he's done 75k miles in a year, but it's pretty close, a thousand a week seems pretty reasonable.

I took about a 30% hit in economy going from a Celica to a BMW, and I'm totally okay with that because I like my comfort while driving.

He has a stupid long commute ~100mi one way, 5 days a week. Add on a couple road trips and running to town when you're in the middle of loving no where and it adds up quick. He was driving a truck so the Yaris has been a huge savings for him.

drat that looks nice. I'm jealous. We bought our place last fall and have been saving/upgrading other parts of the house so the garage with the single build on the side wall is all I have. Don't even have proper storage yet. Once the backyard is finished this summer I get to upgrade the garage! I will probably buy 8-10 of those led fixtures soon just to start getting ready. I was afraid they would be a one and done Costco thing, but mine keeps getting new pallets of them so I think I have some time.

Other than it being hot up in the attic running wire and installing all the outlets wasn't that bad. I think I have less than 8 hours total with hanging the lights and doing all the wiring.

Why another water heater?

Some people add for additional volume, or if they have a large (jetted) tub. A standard 40 gallon doesn't always cut it.

When we moved to our house, it had 2 40 gallon water heaters, but the dummies that plumbed them plumbed them in parallel, instead of in series, so as soon as you started using hot water, cold water ran in to replace it, in both tanks... largely negating the benefit of having 2 tanks. Best practice is to set them up in series, with the first slightly cooler than the second, and have the second feed the house.

That way, when you start using hot water, the hot stuff from the second heater hits first, the slightly cooler stuff from the first comes in and the first slowly cools as the fresh cold water enters the system.

Whatever, I just took out one of the tanks a few months ago after it failed and did not replace it... no huge effect, but definitely lose hot water sooner (second or third person showering in a row). I plan on replacing it with a single, modern 50 gallon this week and I think it'll be sufficient.

Have you seen the drop-in LED replacements for the flourescent bulbs? All you have to do is bypass the ballast, which it sounds like you need to do anyway... could save some time/money.

Tried to mow the lawn today. Mower sounded raspy(?), so I checked the oil. Oil dipstick had, like, a drop on it, so I added more. Started said mower and was met with lots of blue smoke. Oil resevoir then looked milky. Texted landlord and he said it sounded like a little water got in and to try running it again and see if the smoke clears.

Nope. More blue-then-white smoke plus spraying oil from exhaust and a pool of oil on the mower deck. Still waiting on LL to call or text back. Googling the symptoms on a Briggs motor sounds like oil overfill or the mower got tilted. Maybe blown head gasket? Blargh.

In the meantime, I installed the new passenger side sun visor on the truck. Going to wait on the driver's side since it's aftermarket vinyl weirdness and still in good shape. Put in the new front turn/hazard housings, too. Old connections were tough to pull loose, but I finally got it. Put dielectric grease on the new bulb bases, too, so maybe I don't have to do this again in another 70K miles.

Guy I'm hiring to trim the boxwood hedges and do fancy tree stuff might be able to mow for me, but his mower is sick and so is his string trimmer. Maybe it'll happen tomorrow.

Going to be an arts festival on my street next Friday and Saturday and I'm trying to get the place spiffy beforehand. Then I'm getting the gently caress out of town 'cause gently caress that literal noise (music stage beneath my bedroom balcony) and people trying to walk into my home constantly or asking to use my bathroom (and playing in the medicine cabinet.)

The real thing to notice is that Tesla are designing in the ability not to be cemented to one battery tech - if technology changes, everything Tesla does can also be changed almost at a moment's notice. They really are thinking everything through properly from end to end.

Elon Musk doesn't just want to change the world - he's actually doing it and others will follow.

What's interesting about the PowerWall is that the concept isn't new. For years you've been able to use batteries to store excess solar energy for use during peak or no-sun times. However, Musk is creating a marketing opportunity and a sexy new storage unit. Energy storage is now going to be a cool and fashionable accessory to a house, much akin to the Model S sitting in the driveway.

Elon Musk knows how to create products that captivate peoples' imaginations and steer their buying habits. Doing so with alternative energy solutions is not only refreshing, but will also be extremely profitable for long-term shareholders.

I wish I would have had the ability to buy a meaningful bounty of TSLA shares on IPO. Alas, I was one year out of college working at a telemarketing firm.

The escaping a black hole via a Hohmann transfer is not realistic. No amount of energy is going to get you out of the grips of the black hole, unless you are the size of a star. The first planet: it would've been pretty obvious that you do NOT want to land there from orbit, the waves would've been evident from space, even more, the physicists could've predicted them with ease, you really don't want to land on a planet of water that has some massive gravitational sink next to it. Surviving a black hole.....its really hard to say, chances are nothing can survive it, Cooper would've died, but for the story at least the black hole has been 'modified' by future humans to allow for the scene where he tells his daughter the data.

As for the ships: They are actually pretty realistic, even the engine technology is currently under development, and the Rangers are designed around a lifting body concept, one we tested a lot during the Cold War. The most humbling part of the whole movie is the end, because a scenario like what Cooper and Murphey experience is a realistic even if we ever perfect traveling near the speed of light. That could actually happen
