My dad's looking for a cheap portable computer (not bigger than 13", preferably around 11"), running Windows (mainly for Web/Word/Excel/Skype). I'd like to keep it under $300. Bonus points if its available in-store at Best Buy. I'd get him a Chromebook but those don't do Word/Excel/Skype and 11" MBAs are probably out of his price-range. Suggestions?

For one, I can't find any refurbished Lenovos with anything better than a Core2Duo. Lenovo's own Greek store is ridiculously expensive (and can't find any T430/440), half the stores don't have half the stuff, and the closest thing I'm finding is the G50-70. Since you're in Greece just look at the German store. If they have nothing the French store and so on.

All EU outlets I tried are running on the different storefront, and don't have any refurbished pieces at all, or even an option to select refurbished. I have contacted Lenovo Greece, to see if they can help out, and I understand WHY they would be so much cheaper in the US (sales tax, for starters), but it's almost ridiculous. I can get a good one for 600$, OR for 1100euro, that's almost double the price. If nothing comes of that, I think I'll be looking more into the Elitebook I posted about, which is looking pretty good for 400. I can live without a number pad I guess, and I saw some positive reviews about the 8440p series.

Currently looking at the Lenovo Thinkpad E550 - any opinions? The only thing that worries me is that it doesn't have an SSD, and I think I may need one for the amount of data that I work with (+\- 3GB a week). The reviews seem to be pretty solid and I can get it for 590 euro, which strikes me as a good deal. Or am I better off with the Z50-70 mentioned above? Also, both seem to be 15.6" screens - what's the better option for 14"? You want the SSD for snappier startup and general use of any programs you're running and possibly of data you're churning through them. You don't want the SSD as a data grave if you're just downloading fifty thousand hours of porn per week (in fact, you want a cheap 2tb spinning HD for that).

Quick trip report on upgrading the T450S: Got mine with the bare minimum RAM and HDD. Stuck a 500GB Samsung 850, an 8GB stick of RAM, and a 256GB m.2 drive to use as a boot disk. It was incredibly easy to do. The case came off easily (some -- but not all -- of the screws seemed to have washers attaching them to the case, and it was not obvious before removing the screws and finding some washers on the table), and all three components were right on top. In fact, the single hardest parts of the experience were (1) figuring out how to clone the old 500GB HDD to my 256GB m.2 (use Macrium Reflect Free; everything else I tried was an enormous pain in the neck), and (2) learning that the T450S's BIOS doesn't have a fixed boot order. It is possible that I got lucky and Macrium automatically changed the drive letter of my m.2 to C: rather than keeping that letter for the HDD. Now the only question is if I need to leave 45 GB of space free on the m.2 drive (can I get away with fewer).

While those Elitebooks are very tough they're also really bulky and that model is ancient - we still have a bunch in a cupboard at work but they must have been retired going on two years ago. Also that graphics card is truly worthless now - you'd be better off finding one with integrated graphics only.

Huh, good to know that. Any opinion on this? It's a good price, and specs-wise the biggest issue I'm seeing is that the CPU is only 1,7GHz, which might be bad considering I might need VM stuff. Another option is this one, but, again, I have no idea about build quality, and how good Inspirons are.

So I have spent a quite few hours looking at laptops for a new job and I need some help. I will be in the office half of the time and at home the other half. I work as a software developer. I want a desktop replacement laptop (probably a gaming laptop) that has good battery life and doesn't get too hot or loud. I am willing to pay a lot for it. My work is giving me $5000 to build my work environment.I plan to spend as much of that on a great computer as I can. So far the best I have seen is the new Alienware 15/17. They get 7 hours of battery life with a beefy i7 quad core and a gtx 980m. I was thinking of replacing the SSD with a better one since they ship them with a lovely one. However I really don't desire to have an alienware computer, but all the other respectable brands have 4 hours or less of battery life. The current macbook 15 pros are sporting 2 year old parts for top dollar still, but that seems to be the popular choice at the office.

The onsite support was expensive but the machine was still expensive without it. I specced it out myself. The M4800 uses quadro graphics which are poo poo. I had to work with a flight simulator for this job and the $2000+ machine struggled to keep 30 fps in a terrible looking game. Half the time when I undock my computer the wireless doesn't turn back on. Sometimes when I dock the computer the video stays black. The dock is the main reason to have the workstation and it is buggy as hell. Not to mention the dell software tries to update my drivers with the same version over and over. If you care about performance or battery life, then you should get the i3. If you care about gaming, you should get a laptop with a dedicated graphics card like a GTX 960M. The lowest I would go for a gaming capable laptop is (newer) an A8, but at that point, you'd better off buying a i5 + dGPU setup. You might as well get the Acer, but quite frankly, a 500GB HDD and 1368x768 15.6" screen just isn't it. Can you only buy from Officeworks?
