Bears are pretty easy really. They're not particularly quick, and they're easy to attack for a long time after they try to hit you. Stick Quen on just in case, quick-dodge out of the way when they come for you, get a few hits and and then wait for them to lunge again.

Confirming that my brief attempts at the lock mechanic have been utterly disastrous.

Highlight from the Wraith fight I'm still banging my head against: lock on to Wraith in an attempt to single out otherwise elusive targets for focusing. Targeted Wraith teleports away as a second wraith teleports behind me, attempting to attack the immediate threat results in Geralt turning his back to it and windmilling at the locked target across the courtyard.

Don't lock targets.

I discovered this by accident in the noonwraith fight, where you lose lock-on every time you get blinded or she disappears. It made the fight a lot easier because it meant you weren't locked into targeting the one illusion while the others bit you on the arse and gave her all of her HP back. Then I Yrden'd all over the place and went from doing 12-15 a swing to 120+ a swing and mowed her down. Felt bad about having to kill her, I honestly thought it would be nicer to just banish her and let the poor girl rest :(

also I'm doing something super wrong with bears because I'm seriously only hitting for 10 per swing. Not sure what their weakness is that would make them any quicker to kill, but they're not a particularly taxing fight, just long. I've been Brave-Sir-Robin-ing them after killing the first one.

Novigrad, which you can swim/boat to if you don't feel like getting a pass.

I've liked all the alternate sign forms so far. I was using the alternate yrden today and having a magic turret you can drop while doing other stuff is really fun. I'm kinda tempted to get the rest of the alternate forms (have aard and axii left) but I just unlocked the sign intensity abilities. Any opinion on what I should invest in? I tend to use aard on mooks and igni on tougher opponents the most right now.

I seemed to block them occasionally but I haven't even tried in almost two thirds of my game time so it might have just been mistaking animations/SFX early on.

Wow that Baron questline...

I set the forest spirit thing free because I thought the Crones were tricking me. They called it evil, but Johnny said they referred to him as such so I thought I was being clever. Although the ~dark magics~ feel of the rite that needed to be performed was a bit of an indicator it wasn't some kindly tree nymph...and I was pretty sure I had hosed up when the horsey got evil red demon eyes, but I didn't save scum. Turns out it was, in fact, evil.loving making me eat my decisions--whjat a depressing conclusion.

I actually did kind of feel bad for the Baron. The reviewers that mentioned the quest and how you could "sympathize with a wife beater" and were questioning that design made it sound like "sympathizing" gave you a conversation option to the effect of YEAH MAN SOMETIMES THE WOMENS JUST NEED A HIT OR TWO TO SET EM STRAIGHT" but it was nothing like that. Nothing's black and white in The Witcher universe, as usual.

Also, I don't know if it was a bug or not, but if you free the spirit, the Black Beauty shows up at the end of the Ciri bit when you're running away from the crows. You can't interact with it or anything, it's just hanging around right before the bit ends. Curious if that's foreshadowing of something or just a weird glitch. Since that took place in the past, I'm not sure how it would even be there at all, since I hadn't freed it yet.

I just finished this as well.

I made the same choices as you for the same reasons and felt wrong about it the whole time. That said I've always loved exactly that about the choices in these games. The Baron was really growing on me towards the end despite his obvious and many failings but I think the fact that he was pretty much Robert Baratheon helped a bit That whole quest line was so well done.

Yeah the Magic Yrden is great, it farts lightning every second or so at enemies within the radius.

Unrelated, but I don't really get people complaining about the setting. Yeah it's pretty grimdark but holy poo poo this feels like Witcher 3: Peasant Misery Simulator. There are a ton of sidequests everywhere and none of them feel of the shallow MMO "go kill dudes and collect bear asses" or other generic mold. There are all these villages dotted everywhere with a kinda believably-sized peasant population and the quests somehow manage to always feel pretty meaningful and do a lot of world-building.

Edit: like, I kinda care about these poor miserable fuckers.

With most enemies you can tell whether an attack is blockable or not, but drowner animations seem harder to get a read on for me as well.

The quick dodge to the side seems to work with drowners. If you roll around it takes too long for you to recover and they land on you.

Yeah, the Rock Paper Shotgun diary day two summed up the misery and war-torn-ness pretty well: I got a man hanged.

What are people using to take screenshots in non-Steam versions? My copy came free with my jraphics card, with the caveat that I add it to my GoG account and play it through there. Galaxy doesn't have a screenshot button that I can find yet, and apparently Dxtory doesn't take screenshots either?

So I finally got the time to install this yesterday and try it out for a few hours.

Just gotta say that this game is pretty drat good; I haven't really played a decent first/third-person open-world fantasy RPG since Skyrim (Risen 3 doesn't really count, sadly) and this delivers in every way. I still have to see if it raises the bar as everyone keeps saying.

Also, it's actually playable on 1600x900 at a mix of low and medium settings. I'm running a i5-2500k @ 4.5GHz with a mildly overclocked Radeon 6970 @ 890 MHz. That means I can hold out on the upgrade a few more months until Skylake and new GPUs drop. Thanks CD Projekt RED!

It won't let you take screenshots through the steam overlay either and I can't even use my global keybinds, the game is weird like that. I wanted to take a screen shot of a field covered in dead sheep. Livestock in some areas respawn instantly, it's actually pretty profitable considering how much hides sell for.

No glitches at all for me, it seems the only reasonably-repeatable crash I've had is from reading quest books and notes in my inventory. I just F5 now every time I'm going to read one, and with the barely-there load times (seriously, super impressed with their speed) it's almost not an issue at all.

For the people who don't like the sex, what is it you exactly don't like about it and how far along are you? It's rough at the start, but as I've grasped the techniques, like feinting and causing them to come towards you as you dodge out of the way and maneuver behind them to stab them is extremely satisfying.

Once you learn to slow down to get the most distance out of your penetration it really helps. Mixing it up is always a good idea too so you can better take on multiple guys. Especially with the secondary igni. Just whip it out and spray it all over everyone's faces. As long as you have the stamina it's a great finisher.

If you're a sex noob, you'll want to make sure you have protection with Quen. If you're pro like me, you just go in without. Keeps things spicy. Also, make sure to coat your weapon with various oils at all times. Really makes things easier.

Okay so I'm missing a few normal versions of a bunch of potions and bombs and have no idea where to find them. I have the enhanced and superior recipes for them and I'm wondering if maybe I missed the recipe's in a dungeon or a merchant somewhere. I originally assumed they were random drops but I've stopped seeing any schematics a long time ago, are they in White Orchard somewhere out of the way?

I'm missing stuff like Petri's Philter, Dragonpuff and Samum among others.

Tip for fighting bears: use strong attacks. Fast attacks seem to do little damage.

Tip for fighting drowners: use the short dodge backwards instead of to the side. They seem to have quite the horizontal range on their clawing attacks.

Tip for life in general: buy the Witcher 3. It's really very good.

Only played for a couple of hours but its hot as balls so far. Only annoying thing is having to mash escape multiple times to get out of the inventory/journal, and if you're moving the mouse then it overrides escape.
