Related to that story, from the BBC version of it, is this little gem:quote:But Conservative backbencher John Redwood told the Today programme it would be "wrong to hijack" the referendum to extend the vote to groups not previously included in the franchise. Oh, I dunno John, maybe try and talk to them and tell them why it's important and the like and loving engage with them? Christ.

16 and 17 year olds aren't interested in stuff, therefore we can't let them vote on it because... they'd definitely turn up and vote the "wrong way" en masse? Just to show how little they care?

The fact that as important a decision as whether the country where she lives, resides and works stays in the EU or not is one that is being foreclosed to her is not making her happy. Putting it mildly.

Putting it mildly. I can see why EU citizens aren't getting to vote in the referendum. It stops economic migrants coming over now and setting up shop to make sure they can continue to do so. This probably isn't going to happen, but removing the possibility kicks a leg out from under UKIP when we vote to stay in.

hospital is being investigated after a hacksaw was allegedly used to amputate a leg A surgeon is being investigated after allegedly using an old hacksaw to amputate a patient's leg. An elderly patient was admitted to Ayr Hospital in Scotland for a routine operation, but a metal plate was unexpectedly found in his leg. In an astonishing turn of events, a staff member was sent to a local B&Q store to find equipment to conduct the operation. But as the operation was being carried out after 9pm, the store was closed. Instead, a hacksaw from old stock stored in a hospital cupboard is thought to have been used. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/11627214/Patients-leg-allegedly-amputated-with-hacksaw.html

It sounds like they did the best they could in a highly unusual situation - they couldn't close up the leg again and wait until morning after it had already been partway cut off before hitting the plate. It goes on to say that the investigation isn't concerned with the tool used to complete the operation but rather why information about the plate wasn't passed on to the surgical team before the operation - it comes across as a bureaucratic fault rather than a medical one, although I have a medic friend who'd still be a bit wary about using a tool like that even after it had been disinfected.

Yeah I think its fantastic, I mean after you cut half way through someone's leg you really need to finish the job. Needs must and all that. Surprised the tone in that particular paper didn't seem to revel in the fact that it harked back to the surgeons who worked on Britain's great battlefields!

I'm growing increasingly despondent trying to find a decent place to rent in Edinburgh. There seems to be gently caress all that's available at a good price (up to £600 but ideally more toward the £550 bracket). Any help from Scot-goons would be appreciated. Looking through citylets is making me depressed. I could absolutely kill the squatter in our current flat share that has managed to cause this situation.
