Not quite as far reaching as the Brennan Center proposal (using Selective Service, DMV, and other registries to practically abolish it), or the one signed into law in Oregon, but its a good first step.

Add this onto her planned parental leave legislation, and her election is at least something like a plus for a domestic progressive platform.

I have mixed feelings on mandatory registration and early voting based on actually working in voter registration for a period of my life -- also in letting DMV workers register voters but thats mostly because they're moron assholes. That said, I think the benefit out weighs most of those concerns and I am glad she's pushing for greater voting access.

Sure, and again this is completely anecdotal -- I worked in VR/Elections in WV during a period when Joe Manchin was SoS (which is the chief elections official here). And despite being mostly DINO he's very big on opening up the voting and election process. He's a major proponent of early elections and making registering easier.

From that, I am not sure that just because everyone is automatically registered, or rather, forced to that it actually increases voter participation in any meaningful way. Nor do I see it as something that's very enforceable. I completely agree with making it easier to register and understand the entire history of voter disfranchisement. I am just not sure that the benefit is what people think it will be.

That said, one of the things Joe did that was really interesting and maybe helps explain what I mean was changing how the state did jury selection. People in WV used to say that didn't register to vote because they didn't want to be pulled for jury duty. So, we switched to pulling jury duty by social security numbers and tax returns. People didn't suddenly start registering to vote because of it though. They just found a new excuse.

That I do agree with.

There's no need for these half-assed proposals, just make voting mandatory. You can legally spoil your ballot or something if you want, but skipping out on the process entirely should exclude you from taking money from the government - including tax code transfers like the mortgage interest deduction which are vastly larger than welfare and mostly targeted at the relatively well to do, before anyone calls that proposal anti-poor.

Are you going to provide non-campaign financed methods of transport for voting? How do you plan to enforce it?

I understand your idea -- I am just not sure that its really practical to have mandatory voting in a nation as large, complex and diverse as the US.

It should be election days and those days should be on a Friday and Saturday. Many poor/lower income voters work odd hours and/or multiple jobs so they have trouble getting to the polls on a single day. Many "minimum wage" jobs also do not let you take time off to go vote whereas many higher pay/skill jobs reimburse or refund personal time used for voting. Having elections on a Tuesday is something that should have been changed decades ago.

That's the idea behind having no excuse absentee voting. I don't think the actual results show it has increased voter participation by any real amount.

Scholars are some of the most pompous and pedantic people I've ever had the joy of meeting.

As much as I'd love to see this the GOP would literally fight to the death against it because they'd be severely hosed by increased turnout in all elections. Send ever voter a ballot in the mail they can either mail back in by a certain date or drop off at a polling place and it'd be insane. The GOP would drown in their own screams of voter fraud.

See my question on how you'd enforce mandatory voting as a prerequisite for supporting in such scheme but also democracy doesn't mean everyone likes the result.

While it does seem ridiculous that somehow a casino, whose entire business involves people putting money on a table and walking away with nothing, would go bankrupt - there are a few mitigating factors.

1. Trump barely owns any of the Atlantic City casino's that bear his name anymore. I think he has like less than a 5% stake last I heard.
2. The rise of gaming in New Jersey's neighboring states has killed Atlantic City.

There are far nicer beaches in other parts of New Jersey for anyone looking to do down the shore for the weekend, and Philadelphia has multiple casinos now in the city and suburbs to satisfy the gambling itch. Philadelphia PARX, a casino literally a few minutes outside the city is huge, has free parking and the inside is just as nice as anything you would see at Trump Taj Mahal.

1: The reason for this is the bankruptcy. He pulls this poo poo all the time, too, where he finances tacky poo poo with his name on it, it goes under, the creditors get a fraction of their investment back in the form of a gaudy-as-gently caress eyesore stamped with that weasel's name on it, he keeps a token stake for income since the new owners run it properly, repeat.

2: When you gamble with Snooki you gamble with Satan. Folks would rather take their chances with the philly traffic authority.

Yeah, when he put in his joke bid for the Bills, he had to certify with the NFL that he didn't have a major stake in a casino, because that would make him ineligible to become an owner. Instead, he lost because he can't afford a team.
