site posted:To get away from fat shaming for a minute: Hillary is calling for automatic voter registration on your 18th birthday and mandated 20 days of early voting in all elections. Not quite as far reaching as the Brennan Center proposal (using Selective Service, DMV, and other registries to practically abolish it), or the one signed into law in Oregon, but its a good first step. Add this onto her planned parental leave legislation, and her election is at least something like a plus for a domestic progressive platform.

I have mixed feelings on mandatory registration and early voting based on actually working in voter registration for a period of my life -- also in letting DMV workers register voters but thats mostly because they're moron assholes. That said, I think the benefit out weighs most of those concerns and I am glad she's pushing for greater voting access.

site posted:Care to elaborate? Sure, and again this is completely anecdotal -- I worked in VR/Elections in WV during a period when Joe Manchin was SoS (which is the chief elections official here). And despite being mostly DINO he's very big on opening up the voting and election process. He's a major proponent of early elections and making registering easier. From that, I am not sure that just because everyone is automatically registered, or rather, forced to that it actually increases voter participation in any meaningful way. Nor do I see it as something that's very enforceable. I completely agree with making it easier to register and understand the entire history of voter disfranchisement. I am just not sure that the benefit is what people think it will be. That said, one of the things Joe did that was really interesting and maybe helps explain what I mean was changing how the state did jury selection. People in WV used to say that didn't register to vote because they didn't want to be pulled for jury duty. So, we switched to pulling jury duty by social security numbers and tax returns. People didn't suddenly start registering to vote because of it though. They just found a new excuse. neonnoodle posted:Election Day should be a federal holiday and anyone who thinks otherwise hates America. That I do agree with.

There's no need for these half-assed proposals, just make voting mandatory. You can legally spoil your ballot or something if you want, but skipping out on the process entirely should exclude you from taking money from the government - including tax code transfers like the mortgage interest deduction which are vastly larger than welfare and mostly targeted at the relatively well to do, before anyone calls that proposal anti-poor.

Yeah, when he put in his joke bid for the Bills, he had to certify with the NFL that he didn't have a major stake in a casino, because that would make him ineligible to become an owner.
