hello bonjour, en francais we call the bread man l'homme de pain, because pain means bread and we're going to see a lot of pain this year and every nyrfan is looking forward to it and hey tony, can you wait until after my postgame interview to get on your phone? i thought you quit twitter...
Liquor licenses for one-off events that aren't in an existing location with a liquor permit are very difficult. They require an existing permittee (i.e. a caterer with a liquor license) to handle the dispensing, fees can be steep on top of that, and there's no guarantee a permit will be approved if it's for something like a metalfest. Locally, I know there are special provisions for picnics, charity events, golf tournaments, and nonprofits that make it a bit easier, but things like bars expanding or breweries opening basically require bribing someone to actually get a permit processed. Festivals basically need to piggyback off of venues/bars to establish themselves before they'll be considered as a viable venture for being granted a liquor permit. Essentially a trial run of being a legitimate event and not a nuisance.

Maybe it's that I'm a power metal nerd, but that line-up does nothing for me. Not familiar with most of the bands and I'm not a fan of the ones I've heard of.

not sure why you would expect a festival called "FULL TERROR ASSAULT" to be a power metal festival but okay

It's unlikely that they got any kind of funding for this venture without presenting a business model to whoever's fronting the money. More likely this is a longer-term venture, and they want to pack the place and build a following for subsequent years, then try to monetize it later.
I guess I find it easier to believe that this is run kinda half-assed by people who are in over their heads (the BYOB, the buy-one-get-one tickets, the fact that the biggest initially announced headliner isn't playing the fest) than that this is a long-term strategy, but that's just a gut feeling and I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong. I definitely hope they succeed, don't get me wrong

e: probably a liquor law thing too, Illinois is weird
Oh sure, I assumed that it was in no small part a liquor law thing/difficulty of getting licenses, but I would think that most people would consider that a necessary hurdle to overcome in order to succeed at all

It's less that I expected to be a power metal festival and more I was hoping there would at least be a few bands I'd be interested in. I may be a power metal nerd, but it's not the only kind of metal I listen to.

Yes.
Cool. As a sidenote, the name of the label is pretty amusing to me for some reason.

I don't mind the vocals, but the drums could stand to be less muddy, imo.

EDIT: Actually, after further listening, I'd even say I like the vocals.

The Juggalo fests there were BYOB too. Apparently Illinois requires you to be a nonprofit entity to get a special event license.

Found a new post-black-whatever band that I'm digging a lot, recommended for those of you into this sort of thing. The album's up for free on bandcamp: Archivist. The "concept" essay is tl;dr but the music is giving me chills, I'm a sucker for this kind of sound.

Yeah, it's not perfect but I kind of like it and some sections are really cool, so I just spent $6 on the digital version. I like supporting small bands for less than the price of a McDonald's. Thanks for posting the track in the first place!

Speaking of Canadian thrash, I haven't been able to stop listening to Executioner's Song by Razor going on two months now. It's an amazing album back to front.

In case y'all missed it, new Tengger Cavalry came out a few weeks ago.

It's a re-recorded and expanded version of their 2010 album, but from what I've heard of that one, the rerecording isn't unjustified. It's also instrumental, unless you count the background throat-singing as vocals.

There's actually a deathcore band called Nouns iirc.

Metal naming has more -ation suffixes or, if we're getting brutal, -tomy. Or you can just call your band Bathtub Shitter or Amputated Genitals.
