I'm fine with a Skyrim constellation system because it means someone will make a SPERG-equivalent and it will make the game even better

Looks like Agility is back to being the god stat, as it affects stealth, which is always broken in Bethesda Games, and total Action Points, which seem to give you both guaranteed crits and sprint juice. Look, they really do remember the old games

I don't mind it, because skills mattered very little in Bethesda's system anyway, but if Obsidian gets their hands back in the game the percentages will be back and actually tuned properly. I don't think percentage skills were that important in New Vegas, even there you chose 2-3 skills to max out and get all the dialog options for them, for the rest you can use magazines. SPECIAL stats seemed more important since they were pretty hard to change permanently. If they're going to continue stuffing player skill-influenced things into an RPG then I'd prefer if they just removed any illusion of that thing being related to your character's own skills. Like the idea of character skills is great because it means you can play as a sharpshooter even if you the player are terrible at shooting both irl and ingame. But mixing it up so it's part char skill, part player aiming just sucks. Same with lockpicking for that matter. Either make it a skill check so you can play a burgler or a sausagefingers, or just make it entirely that lovely minigame. Obviously I'd prefer the skill system instead, but that's not gonna happen so...

I'm pretty sure Todd Howard said in the aftershow that skills were taken out for the preview to avoid spoiling them. Can't really be assed to actually look back through and find it though. Pretty excited about most of the stuff that was shown, but the ingame UI looked awful and the pipboy UI looked like a reskinned version of the awful UI from 3/NV.

year199X posted:Maybe RPGs aren't your bag then because making you artificially bad at something that you slowly become artificially better at is kind of the point. I can understand the sentiment of "there should be skills and using guns should suck rear end at level 1 and become insanely overpowered at level 50" because it's an RPG/Fallout, but on the other hand, it's also a video game that's supposed to be fun to play. If Fallout 4 was an old fashioned isometric turn-based RPG, I would agree with you. But it seems more like a 1st person shooter game where you play the role of a vault dweller in a post-apocalyptic world. I just think of Bethesda's games as spinoffs at this point. edit: welp skills still in the game whatever then

year199X posted:Maybe RPGs aren't your bag then because making you artificially bad at something that you slowly become artificially better at is kind of the point. I think the point is that abstracting your skill with guns to a number works, or at least feels better with turn-based diceroll combat than it does when you're actually aiming and firing the gun yourself. In that situation you could make the skill affect things like your accuracy which kind of undermines being able to aim yourself and makes the combat feel worse than it should (or on the opposite end weirdly, overpoweringly accurate) or have it affect things like the damage and rate of fire, which makes absolutely no logical sense whatsoever. It's a difficult one, and I'm fine with simplifying it as long as it doesn't render the whole point of having skills, perks and stats in the first place (to build and roleplay a CHARACTER who is DIFFERENT to another character you might build) moot.
