Actually, as an interesting aside, English already HAS a proper colletive word for 'you'. It's 'you'. You orignally was meant for you-plural, but somehow became you-singular. That's why we say 'you are' even though it would make more sense (since it is singular) to say 'you is' The orginal you-singular word was ye.

Samovar posted:The orginal you-singular word was ye. Actually it was thou/thee. Ye was object form, you was subject form (so you can probably guess which is which in the case of thou/thee). One other reason why thou was eventually replaced by you is that þ (basically th) was printed as y on most early printing presses. Places like Ireland just went a different route than most other areas that speak English and have you being singular while ye remained plural but I think the formality of the words disappeared a while ago.

The Democrat Party doesn't like Catholics? Really? You mean the party that trotted out John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy to my father's catholic family in the 1960's? By the way, who's side was it that was making accusations that they were going to take orders directly from the Vatican? Sure wasn't the dems, was it?

FuzzySkinner posted:The Democrat Party doesn't like Catholics? He's speaking to Catholics that basically vote solely upon the abortion issue, and generally speaking after Roe v. Wade a ton of Catholics went from a solid-Dem voting bloc (because of economic issues--most Catholic families in this country weren't very far removed from being poor immigrants in the '60s/'70s, and as such were pretty reliably pro-union, pro-civil rights, pro-peace (except with the Soviets), pro-more economic relief) to something much more muddled. (The whole "voucher" issue has also played a part in this shift, because of the sizable number of Catholics that send their kids to religious schools--another tradition that goes way back to early immigrant days, when a fervor was whipped up about Rome taking over the school system and as such the public schools became slightly anti-Catholic as a result--and want a bit of government coin to offset the cost of tuition.) Also, again because of abortion (and increasingly, gay marriage) most of the people that whipped up the "ruled from the Vatican" sentiment when JFK (and before him, Al Smith--look up "rum, Romanism and rebellion") ran for office became very friendly with Catholic leaders and quickly forgot all about the whole Rome thing.

Once segregation kicked into high gear the public pools dried up and instead of public pools, new pools were gated affairs that required membership that was unsurprisingly unobtainable for most black people. Get depressed: early public pools were heavily sexist, racist, and basically pedophile assembly lines. http://thedollop.libsyn.com/the-dark-secret-of-swimming-pools

We are supposed to sit by and accept all of this. Redefinitions of marriage to include...? No telling where it's going. But the definitions have been obliterated now. Rachel Dolezal is actually loving delusional and it sucks that she's both being taken seriously, especially now that she's tied her hosed up story to Caitlyn Jenner's transition. We had tons of trolls calling themselves 'transethnic' but that wasn't an actual thing that happened until Rachel was outed. It was always just dumb motherfuckers squinting or wearing blackface and justifying their use of slurs while simultaneously harassing trans people.

It's more "moral majority" coalition as opposed to "just" gay rights and abortion. It's less "since roe v wade" and more "since pat Robertson reached out to Catholic suburbanites". How wedge issues are applied matters. Hispanic Catholics aren't running to the republican party. Urban Catholics are still solidly democratic (though the white ones is mostly a dying breed of racist union democrat).
